Drivers side mirror glass fell out
« on: 20 August 2019, 20:15:14 »

I'd seen the glass fluttering at mway speed, thought not good, then day or so later parked in a bit where I put mirror in to avoid being hit by passing traffic and out it fell and cracked in 2 bits. I'm wanting to buy replacement but not sure if the fleabay ones have the bend in them for the blind spot. Can anyone recommend where to get good replacement?

I'm not sure if this had been replaced before as the backing plate looks almost like it's been burnt/chemical reaction or something, and there is a slight reflection in it like it was shiny plastic at one point.

I have used omega52 on eBay to buy door mirror units so I always have spare glass of the correct type for my Omega, as well as everything else that comes with them.

I looked recently and he still had a few units available ;)

Just checked the eBay site and there a quite a few whole units available, plus glass by themselves.

How about a new one for a tenner?

How about a new one for a tenner?

Because the OP stressed he wants to ensure his replacement is of the same design and quality as the genuine Vx Omega article.

But there are replacement pattern ones on Ebay which he will see and he will no doubt decide what he wants ;)

Nearly 20 years use will make those original attributes considerably less important.

Really?! :o

My on car mirrors, and my stock of "used" ones are as good as they were when so called "brand new" and perform as they did, in my case, 16 years ago.  Glass in mirrors that do not come against a strong stream of air, like the windscreen does, and has not been cleaned with any corrosive or abrasive agent, should not have any deterioration in their ability to function, including the bevelled edge. ;)

My experience of aftermarket mirror glass replacements is poor, both with Vauxhalls / Omegas and also with other vehicle makes. They either don't fit properly because the clip retainer ring is the wrong profile or shape, or the heated element terminals are the wrong size and need modifying. Many arent the exact shape as the original either.
The tenner spent on a cheap aftermarket mirror glass is generally a waste of money, in my opinion, especially when it falls off at speed either scratching the door panel if the wires stay connected or smashed on the road if they part company.
I would always buy genuine VX mirror glasses, either new or used. I have never had a problem with used genuine mirror glasses. They fit and look correct, whether they have the heated element symbol on them or not, and are usually cheaper than a tenner.

And that is exactly why I always buy genuine Vx/GM parts, new or used, unless there is absolutely no alternative, which thank God is still rare, so far!! That way you know the quality, specification and reliability will suit your Omega 8) :y

A second hand one will have weak demisters, and possibly the coating is on its last legs.

Its easy enough to ask any egay* sellers if they have the blind spot bit.

*other outlets are available, and generally infinitely better.  But egay suits the bone idle.

That's the reason I normally replace mine, rather than glass damage.  Manually wiping the mirrors is so last century.

Though the mirror (without glass or covers) is reasonable at £250+VAT, and that's a powerfold one.
