Terrific guide, but all those caveats frighten me!
My key hesitates every now and then (once a month, nothing serious - yet); would it be helpful to squirt in a drop of magic WD40 or aerosol grease to defer the awful moment when it needs that procedure?

Kwik-Fit try to promote it any time you visit, but at about £2 per tyre - no thanks!

Omega General Help / Re: Brake Line Repair Questions
« on: 17 April 2014, 06:40:24 »
Thanks for the clarification, Andy. That just shows how out of date I am; the last time I replaced any brake pipes was on my 1938 Morris 12!
Er - I did NOT buy it from new.......

Testers vary in their opinions! I was told once that as long as you cover the pipes with grease, they will assume that the pipes have been protected and will look no further.
Is there still a debate about copper vs steel, Nick?
Copper was frowned upon once because it was thought not to be able to withstand the pressure of modern hydraulics, then steel was discredited because of corrosion issues so copper came back in favour!

Battery delivered mid-morning by courier, fitted and works fine! Such good service deserves to be broadcast.
I have had SO much useful information and help on here from all you nice people that as and when I can return the compliment I will.

Surely both cyclists and equestrians are inappropriate to today's roads and traffic conditions? As they make no contribution to road costs and are not licensed - therefore not answerable for their misdeeds as motorists are - and cannot be banned, it is time to consider whether they should be on the road at all.
In fact, they often are not, preferring to ride illegally on the pavements and/or ignoring traffic lights, etc.
Those cyclists who are also drivers will try to counter the above by saying that they paid road tax as well, but they pay as MOTORISTS, not cyclists.

About 2 1/2 years ago I bought a battery from Advanced Battery Supplies (www.advancedbatterysupplies.co.uk/vauxhallomegapetroldieselcarbatteries),  It cost me £45 back then, including delivery. It arrived the next day, with an upgrade to a better type for no extra charge!
Recently it has been losing charge, so I emailed the company to check the warranty and I had an immediate response, asking me to charge it overnight, independently of the vehicle and ring them (freephone)  the following afternoon regarding the outcome.
After charging, I used a 5 amp load to discharge it and the terminal voltage dropped to 10 volts within 2 minutes and sustained that voltage for a couple of hours.
Dead cell, I concluded, so I reported this to the suppliers, and they readily agreed with my diagnosis and are sending me a replacement immediately!
Can you ask for better than that?

Ron.

P.S. The standard warranty is for 4 years - better than Halfrauds?

Glad that you arrived safely, Kate. I'd gladly tolerate a shit-hole to live in Looe! All of your problems will be solved by the hundreds of Oofers queueing up to help you in exchange for a stay in Cornwall......
 ;D ;D ;D

Why?
Apart from the need for hefty leads to minimise voltage drop, unless you opt for a sealed battery you will obviously need to consider possible spillage, fumes/acid vapour and the like. I'm sure there are other factors that Oofers will come up with, too......

General Car Chat / Re: Please help me read my multimeter
« on: 11 April 2014, 16:41:35 »
Do you have a little adjuster/wheel on your meter to balance out the lead resistance? If so, short the test probes together and turn the wheel until the meter reads zero and you will have the true reading of the item you are measuring.
But yes, I concur - 1.1 ohms as read, with lead resistance.

General Car Chat / Re: Exhaust horse hair
« on: 10 April 2014, 21:48:35 »
Wow, I must have dodged a bullet! It happened to me on my previous Omega on a trip from Essex to Dorset; saw the stuff poking out of the tailpipe when stopped at Fleet Services, pulled a lot out and had no idea what it was, but no difference in exhaust note,or performance, so I continued on my way.
The following day I called in to a local garage, asked what it was and was told it was simply heatproof sound deadening, like loft insulation, and to pull whatever I can see out and ignore it.
If I had known of the potential explosion risk, I would have been off to Marks and Spencers at once! ;D
Still, maybe with most of the horse hair removed it was safe enough?

No, Mr. Opti, NOT only in America: do you remember a few years back some men (boys?) broke into a branch of Boots, did some thievery and photographed their antics?
The following day, with all the presence of mind of an Einstein, they took the film into THAT branch of Boots to have the film printed!
Well, the photo machine operator didn't need telling to get the police to wait for them to collect their prints......

As Andy said, try Ebay for a new case, but have you tried using a scalpel to cut through the superglue at the case joins? Go at it carefully and don't rush and with luck .....

I don't think petrol is so forgiving of long storage, though?
