Title: World Cup Thread
Post by: Varche on 13 June 2018, 18:04:35
I am genuinely excited (again). I come out of hiding for the Euros and the World Cup and then spend two years recovering.

I think our team have a good chance. Young, full of energy, no great egos.

My Spanish friend is quite downbeat about Spain's chances but rates them higher than England. He thinks France versus Argentina for the final.

Who do you think will win?

I doubt we will win it but I'm glad we are  ayoung team instead of the experienced but well past their best players we usually take.

I am also looking forward to it, but I like football.

So long as we (England) play like we care, I will be happy.  We are too young and inexperienced to win it, but if we get out of  the group - which we should - every game is a final and anything can happen - Greece won the Euros against all expectation.

I get that not everyone likes football, but really don't get why there is so much hatred towards the team  :-\

Exactly. We should be patriotic. However we aren't very as a nation.

No self respecting Spaniard would do other than support Spain in the football, Alonso/Sainz in F1.

Put simply, they don't play with the conviction that the position demands.

Oh, and they aren't a team, they are a selection of people in the same place that happen to be wearing the same clothes.  ;)

On the plus side, catch up TV is going to be getting a hammering in my house. I'm not a football fan, if I'm unlucky, I might catch a game.

Varche, there will be loads of negative posts on this thread from the footie haters  . . . but one or two on here are football followers, myself included  . . .so will be following carefully  :y

We already know England probably wont go that far . . .but stranger things have happened .

We already know a lot of the oofers who detest footie  . . .so asking  in a polite manner, it would be sensible for those who have no interest ,not to post on a thread that you have no knowledge in or know nothing about   :-X :-X

Will be following England . . . but France , Germany, Brazil etc. will always have a major chance along with IMO Belgium who have a very strong side on paper  :-\

Be great if the arabs can get a result against Russia  today  ;D ;D ;D

Very strange decision to sack the Spanish manager as the tournament starts  :o :o :o

Actually, anyone can have, and voice, their opinion on anything here. Within reason.

When they come home after four games, I will say I told you so. Loudly and often.

Howevever, if they actually achieve anything, then I will be suitably gracious ;)

Will I follow it? Possibly, from a distance. Will I watch it, probably not unless the results suggest it worthwhile.

It's not hatred. Being English we crave disappointment, and all of the national teams are happy to provide it.

After being on here , albeit under different guises, for 9 years I do know that .

My point was that  . .why post on a thread  & give an opinion on a subject that you have no knowledge of or no interest in . Different of course if poster is asking advice or seeking to better his/her knowledge of the said subject  ;)

Anyway  . . .get up to the bar & get yourself another pint  . . .your on holiday  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thats a bit strong, isnt it, telling people to butt out that have no interest in the Game and that they have no Knowledge or know nothing about it.

Im a great fan of England, in fact thats the only footie I watch, so once every 2 tears for me, WC and EC, for the few weeks before they get kicked out, as for my knowledge of England Football Team, Well I know this, last time England won a World Cup was 52 Years ago, and as for the Euro Cup, Dont Bother, some Record for a Country that invented the Game, and you wonder why people are so negative about the Team.

If that wasn't a Freudian slip, it was very apt. Me to a tee. I have little interest in football until the Euros and the World Cup. Then I cheer on England/Wales/Scotland until they are either victorious or knocked out . Then I shed a tear and go back to my normal life for another two years.

Portugal 3 - Spain 3  Great game!  :y

Although the Portugeezers (especially Ronaldo!) were dropping like flies at the slightest touch!  ::)  IMO both Ronaldo's pen and free kick goals were the result of a soft foul/dive!  >:(

Still a cracking match though! :y

Hmm, they were lucky this time, typical England Football though score a Goal in the First Half then become complacent, give away a Foul, Free Kick or Penalty and then spend the rest of the match trying to catch up again, as said this time they were lucky.

There didn't seem to be much passion going on... The shouts from the bar could have been counted on one hand with a couple of fingers left over, the groans might have needed an extra thumb :D

The Spain/Portugal game, by comparison, was pretty much a constant stream of noise from start to finish...

Oh Dear, looks like Poland haven't quiet got the hang of this Football malarkey,

First Goal in there Net was by one of there own Defenders, second in the Net and there is no Polish Goal Keeper, he's half way down the Field having a Tea Break.

They would have scored more points by not Playing, Bless

Got to have fair play and all that, might offend a Panamanian. Just over 4 million Panamanians. I wonder if their national TV coverage was "unbiased". I guess not if it is vaguely like Spanish TV. Their reporting on sports events is very nationalistic. The F1 for example you would think that Alonso and Sainz were the only two cars on the track. ;D ;D ;D

The people I feel sorry for are all the amateur referees who give up so much time to support "grass roots" football in this country. Their job has been made 1000 times harder by the pitiful refereeing and appalling behaviour of so called "professional" players.

They will now have every useless player who thinks he is the next Ronaldo playacting and pushing/shoving/holding in the penalty area with the idea that if it can be done at the world cup then they can do it .....

Any "strong" referee who actually penalises such activities ... in accordance with the laws ... will also have face the "mobbing" by players and, probably worse, the wrath of parents on the sidelines who think their "little darling" can do no wrong.........

I'm afraid the genii is out of the bottle and it will never get forced back in .... thank the Lord I'm no longer involved at any level, if I still was ... I'd be leaving PDQ.

Without officials there will be no matches .. and I can see that point coming ...

I, too, am glad I am out of it. I could not go back into refereeing (if I was able) for all the tea in china. I have watched from a distance, and its all as Entwood describes !! :(

Parents in my days as a ref, were always a problem. Some made blaspheming by adult players sound totally trivial !!!! >:(

Probably  true  . . ..  but here we go again  .  .negative vibes being whipped up by the media.

No game at this stage is going to be easy  . . .   but no great shame if we do lose as we have done better than most thought .  Sweden are very organised defence wise , but with their system they may struggle to contain the England midfield , where IMo most games are won .

Cannot see why sterling is constantly picked to start, he misses every chance he gets & in my book is just a bit player  . . .better off without him  >:( >:(

England will be confident if it goes to pens though . . .   8) 8) 8)

The way people are going on this morning on tv. We were unlucky, we were fantastic, incredible.
FFS, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Portugal, Uruguay.....all knocked out in the earlier rounds. But not by England, by the other teams in the latter stages. If we'd won our group (instead of being soundly beaten by Belgium, have we forgotten that one?) we'd have been home long ago.
I'm not knocking the fans, the dreamers, but this is like a party political broadcast, where you just know they're talking shite.

As my flight landed last night someone on board got the game up live on a tablet as England scored. So that was a git. Hate knowing part of the result in advance.

Got home and avoided the result. Watched the bbc replay at 12.15 our time. It was 3 when i got to bed.

Well done England getting as far as they did. Our media need a good slapping using words like crashing out. They didnt just got beaten by a better side. Any other European country and our guys would be heroes.

Aswell as VAR the ref ought to have a taser to use on the many divers and pugilists.

For once I couldnt agree with you more, as you say, by hook, crook or luck,  the Bigs Boys managed to get themselves knocked out, and we didnt have to play any of them, we would have got slaughtered if we did.

Probably best were out now, rather than have to painfully lose in the the Finals, the French would have kicked our arse anyway, France have been playing brilliantly and deserve to be in the Finals.

As for Croatia, they seemed half asleep in the first half but soon woke up to prove they were the better Team, England, well we did what we normally do, wacked one in, then became complacent and played the rest of the match like a Sunday morning kick around.

Sorry to be a downer, but our luck had just run out, and Im afraid thats all it was, we were lucky to get were we did.

Whaddayer mean, for once?  ;D

That must be the third time in as many weeks that we have been spanked by Brussels...  ::)

Still, at least it's official. When it comes to international football, we're not just second best, or even shite. Oh no, we're really shite.

The 'hype' has gone to our heads unfortunately.

The teams we beat were poor.

Was looking to have a flutter on todays final . But I think France will win and, they are such strong favourites, that it's just not worth it.
So I decided to back Mbappe to score in 90 minutes. He has scored in three of the last four and Sky had boosted the price from 2/1 to 4/1. At least I'll have some interest in the match.

Can you imagine if we had won the cup ? our footballers would have gone from arrogant tossers on to the next level of tosserdom , Southgate would become a Sir , everyone else would be MBEs OBEs etc , doesn't bear thinking about  ;)

I shall try to avoid the game if I can, but I shall try and take the time for some sincere prayers, that France don't win.  ::)

Yea the odds on France winning are not a good bet. I decided to have a flutter on the final going to penalty shootout, but Croatia will then be down to 4 men, France would have used up all its goalies through injuries and the actual result wouldn't become clear until after the 27th Penalty by which time half the Stadium would be in Flames anyway through the Fans being frustrated..   :)

Bookie gave me some excellent Odds, so decided to have a couple of quid each way, reckon this time in a few of hours I could be a Millionaire.   :y

I had no interest in this game. The only way I was ever going to watch it was if I had a tenner riding on it. My man can still score up to the 90th minute, so it will keep me interested.
Idiotic penalty decision btw.
