General Car Chat / blocked washer jets
« on: 17 March 2021, 18:09:45 »
My daughter messaged me earlier to say that her mate's car had failed its MOT due to blocked washer jets, and the garage in question had quoted £100 to sort it. My daughter .... who is 'careful' with money (no idea where that's come from  :-X) thought it was way too much ... I agreed & offered to look.

Too late, her mate had given the garage the go ahead to sort them at the quoted figure.

I've no idea what the car was or the cause of the blockage, but £100 seems to taking the pi$$ to me.

General Car Chat / Honda E

I saw one of these parked up today ... they're certainly different. Not sure I like the 'wooden' trim  :-\

I've just looked them up on Auto Trader ...... How much?!?!?!?  :o :o

General Car Chat / Yank Tank seat belts
« on: 18 February 2021, 22:13:40 »
I've watched a few of Derek's ViceGrip Garage videos and a few of the cars have unused seat belts clipped up in the roof. I know the Yanks had a few variations on auto seat systems that were set up in such a way it was almost impossible not to use them ie an anchor point fastened to the door.
If you go to 1 hour 2 mins in the video you can see what I mean ..... anyone know how/why they're where they are?

General Discussion Area / laminate flooring trim
« on: 11 February 2021, 18:21:34 »
My daughter has just had laminate flooring laid. I know there has to be an expansion gap around it but .... they have left a gap around the front edge of the fire place/hearth. While my daughter is very pleased with the whole thing, I think this gap looks horrible and will be a general sh1te trap.
My question is .... is there some kind of flexible 'rubber'/flexible 90 deg trim available to cover this gap? There are some fairly small radiuses/radii around the hearth. Or just fill the gap with wood coloured sealant?

General Car Chat / 'professional drivers' .....
« on: 20 August 2020, 23:44:23 »
Returning home on the M1 southbound and close to joining the M62, I'm doing 55mph in cruise, as I have been for a number of miles before hand, 2 lanes bear left, I'm in the nearside lane, I'd seen a HGV (some kind of rigid tipper wagon) behind me pull out as we'd approached the turn off. As he was alongside me I was aware he was indicating left but assumed he was indicating from bearing left  :-\ ..... next thing he sounded his horn  ???  ???
He wanted me to slow down to allow him to pass me to take the next junction that we were almost at! He was the one that had JUST pulled out to overtake me. I just carried on at my set 55 mph while he braked to pull in behind me with much horn blaring!!
Tosser!

General Discussion Area / my phone has died
« on: 19 May 2020, 10:45:15 »
It's a Samsung S6 & though I've had it a while now and the battery life could be better it's done what I wanted to.
It was on charge all last night, used it this morning to check on something with the bank, put it in my pocket when I walked the Mutt. Took it out to look while walking & the screen was blank .... thought maybe the battery had died but nothing when on charge at home.
Obviously nothing was backed up ......   :-[ :-[ :-[

What are the chances of recovering stuff off it?  :-\ :-\ :-\

General Discussion Area / Unbelievable Sparks
« on: 04 May 2020, 15:30:06 »
I've always said that there are some sparks at work that I wouldn't trust to wire a plug .... this is the proof.
Very long story short .... a hoist needed wiring up and a temporary supply to feed it. Some numpty wired a socket to it instead of a plug so the obvious solution  was  ....

General Car Chat / charging batteries
« on: 02 April 2020, 15:45:58 »
I'll ask here .... better chance of a reply rather than the MB's forum standard reply of take it to a dealer/indie.  ::)

If I wanted to use a CTek on my ML due to it standing more than normal, does anyone know if the auxiliary battery in the 'boot' get charged if I just connect the charger to the jumper connections under the bonnet? (starter battery lives under the driver's seat) Access to the aux battery requires dismantling of the boot liner/carpet.
I'm not really sure what the aux battery is for .... some suggest it's something to do with stop/start.  :-\

General Discussion Area / 'key workers'
« on: 19 March 2020, 12:28:37 »
Who's going to define who or what a 'key worker' is when the powers that be say that schools are shut apart from to the kids of 'key workers'.
SWMBO works in ASDA, supermarkets are required to stay open, which obviously means the staff are required to turn up for work and obviously many of them have kids. Everybody who works in a supermarket is required to keep that store open.

General Discussion Area / sealed lead acid batteries
« on: 21 February 2020, 22:38:23 »
long story  .... very short
My Mum has/had a 4 yr old motorbility scooter that was semi drowned in a recent flood. Unfortunately I didn't get chance to do anything with it sooner but last night I stripped the two battery cases (2x12v batteries in series) to find two batteries similar to these clicky Each battery showed next to the square root of f*** voltage wise. They have both been on a dumb battery charger over night .... 1 looks to be showing signs of taking a charge, but the other is showing about 6 volts.
Is the expert opinion that both batteries are beyond redemption or is there a chance of recovery?

General Car Chat / Bump .... !@?&
« on: 20 February 2020, 17:14:49 »
Why is it when people drive into the back of you, they always seem to have a reason why it's your fault? Last night a girl ran into the back of the ML in stop, start rush hour traffic & apparently it was my because I didn't set off when most of the other traffic started to move ??? .... reason being was that the car in front of me stalled so didn't move!  ::)

£1100 ..... though I knew the body shop I took it to wasn't the cheapest, but the chrome bit is over £400 on its own.
