Not that familiar with the dti's but I'd say check the normal things, cambelt (when was it last changed), does it start first time or need a good crank (could be an old battery or symptons of something more serious), check for mayo in the oil filler cap, oil colour, coolant colour, is the gear change smooth, does the clutch feel too heavy? and finally does everything electrical work properly? hth

Think it's chain driven ;)

Don't worry too much about oil colour... It's an oil burner so it'll be black within a couple of hundred miles of changing it ;) My van has 2600 miles on it and the oil's black ::) I'd change it between intervals (12500 miles) if they hadn't given me an unlimited mileage warranty ::)

Definite timing chain on these engines, they tend to rattle slightly when first started if they are worn.

Thanks again to you all, will let you know how I get on, dealer is asking £2499 but I will be negotiating hard ,the way things are at present I think will find the lure of a cash deal tempting, car will have to live up to his description though.
