Merc DIY Service
« on: 20 May 2018, 06:20:57 »

Quotes by Indie's approx. £280, didn't bother to get a quote from the main dealer.

DIY:-

Air filter - piece of cake
Cabin filter - a bit fidley, but will be easier next time, now I know what I'm doing.
Oil Filter - piece of cake.
Oil Change - piece of cake with a pump.

Cost inc. oil and parts approx. £70

Probably one of the easiest cars I've worked on to do a basic service, everything was so accessible :y

Even easier than my 2.2 Omega.

To do ATF change, not inc. in Indie quotes.

Brake fluid change, not inc. in Indie quotes

Fuel filter, not inc in Indie quotes.

Do modern Mercs still have the oil filter at the top of the engine? My w201 does and my w202 also did.
It makes me wonder why all the others don't design their engines the same way.

Same as the D5 engine.

32mm socket on the plastic housing, then unclip the paper filter and drop it straight in the box the new one came in, change the big rubber o-ring on the housing and reassemble. A 2min job (that actually takes 2mins), no mess and no farting about with filter wrenches.  :y

The thing is, every engine modern engine is going to have its oil pump at or below crankshaft level, so plumbing in a run up to a top mounted filter and then back to the oil galleries (crankshaft level, again) is a ballache. Plus, most modern cars are designed to be serviced from below on a ramp, as that's how you have to do most of the other servicing tasks, anyway.

If you're only going to use it for draining dirty oil, why clean it?
