BTW, I eat whatever I want to eat and, the more I'm told about the rights and wrongs of it, the more I refuse to comply. I'm 6 foot tall and 13st 4lbs, and my doctor tells me that my BMI is 23 or something and it should be 18.

You and Tunnie can both do one  :P :P ;D I'm still trying to shift the 15lb I gained in a week in Vegas! ;D :'(

Perhaps you are simply 'big boned' Aaron. :)

That is what my Grandmother used to call it.

So, there are plans for calories counts on all menus. Which idiot thought that one up ? Ah The Department of Health.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-45420835

Very simple, big organisations will be able to do it as they can employ labs etc to work it all out. Your local cafe or independent won't be able to do that and will either not comply and break the law, or go out of business. And of course there would need to be checks to ensure that calorie counts are accurate. A real shed load of red tape. Maybe someone somewhere wants to sets up a consultancy to advise on compliance, at a price of course  ::)

. . . . . . also, the only people who read the calorie content of foods, are already thin
Ain't that the truth. I work on this principle: If I go into a fish and chip restaurant, I'm not expecting to find any low calorie food. Fats gits, like you  ;D, are generally happier with life, as long as you don't let the bastards grind you down with their 'advice' on healthy eating. F**k 'em, Rog, just enjoy your food.

Yes...I think people can worry unnecessarily about carrying an extra pound or two.

However, if you get to the stage of having a 'buried penis' it is probably time to take stock. :y

......the same applies if you can't reach around to wipe your arse.

Common sense really. :)

I suspect that this will fall to the local authorities to police as part of their licensing process :-\

Restaurants and cafés etc already have to comply with allergy labels so in real terms I don't think that this will actually be such a big deal... The information is already on the packaging when it arrives from the wholesaler and I suspect that there will be a compliance time frame to enable the adjustment ;)

Whether it needs to be done is a whole different question  :-X

Article I read says its about £500 for each dish which will need to be redone if ingredients changed. There will also have to be considerable latitude where all ingredients are different many by a considerable margin. Otherwise it could be a nice earner in fines for the government as big as motorist entrapment. What is will mean is that all meals are supplied by factories, like Brake Brothers, that can afford this, due to the volumes sold and then cooked in a microwave at your local restaurant, unless you are eating at a £100-200 per head restaurant. This will mainly affect adults as they tend to eat much more than children at restaurants, while this measure is being studied as part of reducing childhood obesity. The law of unintended consequences means that the only freshly cooked wholesome food will be there for the few that have the time and inclination to cook at home with fresh ingredients. :(

Even if they provide an opt-out for small restaurants like they have for 5p shopping bags it will only be a temporary measure, where the do gooders now want to make bags 10p and it to apply to all shops and our socialist government is looking to introduce this. Again the irony is that by far the biggest plastic polluters are Asian countries with much of that the dumping of Western plastic, where local authorities sell to the cheapest contract and the disposal companies illegally dump it. :(

What it does show is that the Conservatives are a party of big taxes, big government and big regulation socialism these days. >:( We need new right wing parties that aren't UKIP.

Not wanting to upset you, but this is already very much the case at pretty much any chain that you care to name... be it Burger King or Garfunkels or Weatherspoons ::)

And chains have been providing nutritional information for at least a decade...

Another non story from the FailyDale no doubt ;D

Now that we will be leaving the EU and in theory no longer subject to the rules and regulations that apparently spew out of Brussels, I'm sure that our own civil servants from Whitehall to your local village parish council are rubbing their hands at the regulatory vacuum that they are itching to fill with their own petty diktats!  ::)  :P

Used to read all the labels to make sure ingredients were compatible with Maureens needs[she was diabetic and had various other ailments which could make things tricky at times]now she's gone and I'm on my own the only thing I read is what's inside the can/box etc-after all don't want to end up with tinned spaghetti instead of baked beans!Other than that I eat what I fancy.

Correct and that is why I don't eat in any of the big chains. I personally can't see any point in eating out if it is an overpriced frozen microwaved meal, where the spotty faced 16 year old food preparer's only skill is being able to press a couple of microwave buttons, scratch his itchy arse, where nobody on the shift can be bothered to put a new toilet roll in the cubicle, while cooking and then sloshing it on a plate with his extra digestive bacteria, but each to their own. :o

Ingredients required for long life chilled and frozen food is primarily about food safety and is very different to cook to consume now food. The three cheap natural preservatives used in processed food being fat, salt and sugar and other chemicals like emulsifiers to stop oil and other ingredient separating, flavour enhancers and colourings. The widespread use of two particularly nasty ingredients are hydrolyzed oils to make them solid which produce trans fats (now illegal in food in US but legal in EU) and palm oil which is very, very high in saturated fat and a good cancer growth enhancer. Yummy.

The first half of this sentence is correct. :)
