General Car Chat / Mitsubishi Shogun
« on: 12 October 2012, 11:30:25 »
Picked up an 11 plate Shogun on Tuesday, been using it for the past few days, and I can honestly say it's possibly the only car I've ever got in and thought this will easily last forever. Absolutely everything about it feels strong and robust, everything about it is manly, and it's got one huge equipment list, the best bit of that being a Rockford Fosgate sound system (I wasn't even aware they still existed). I can feel me forming a mutual attachment to it to be honest ;D

General Discussion Area / There's been a fight.
« on: 11 October 2012, 23:25:51 »
WARNING! There has been a fight in the biscuit tin. A lad called Rocky, hit a Penguin with a Club, tied him to a Wagon Wheel with a Blue Ribbon and made his Breakaway in a Taxi. Police say Rocky was seen just After Eight by a viscount from Maryland, Hobnobbing with a Ginger Nut and an accomplice known to the police as Rich Tea. They don't have a crumb of evidence and the Jammy Dodger might get away with it!

General Car Chat / Gutless rubbish
« on: 25 September 2012, 17:47:31 »
Bought a few Fiat Puntos lately (well I say I, but my son took the reigns and got them), and went to pick them up this morning, all '12' Plates, they were all cheap so didn't really bother reading the Spec's on them. Got in one this morning and oh deary me, what an absolutely awful engine! Driving them about, from the pick up point to my place, couldn't help but notice how slow they really are  :o. Didn't take note of the engine size, but I was thinking a 1.0, or at the very most a rubbish 1.2, to my amazement getting them back to my place and realising they were 1.4's shocked the life out of me. They are so slow it's unreal, they do a 1.4 16v, I've the the 8v, so if anyone is after a Punto, don't buy a 1.4 8v, or a 1.2 because they are pathetic.

General Discussion Area / Irish bank transfer & travel from Ireland
« on: 24 September 2012, 11:43:00 »
Got a guy interested in one of my cars, unfortunately he's in Ireland, anyway basically he wants to bring the money half cash, half via a bank transfer. He wants to transfer half into one of my bank accounts and half into another. As he is with an Irish bank, will he be able to do an electronic transfer when he is over here, and it'll be done within a couple of hours say?

Also from Gatwick or Heathrow is there a train station nearby?

General Discussion Area / This is a long read, so be prepared
« on: 14 September 2012, 17:46:29 »
But I'll be totally honest, it gave me a moment for thought, and certainly tugged at my heart strings, it's quite lengthy, but worth a read:

A sweet lesson on patience.

A NYC Taxi driver wrote:

I arrived at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again. Since this was going to be my last ride of my shift I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked.. 'Just a minute', answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie.

By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets.

There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard
box filled with photos and glassware.

'Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.

She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. 'It's nothing', I told her.. 'I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.'

'Oh, you're such a good boy, she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, 'Could you drive
through downtown?'

'It's not the shortest way,' I answered quickly..

'Oh, I don't mind,' she said. 'I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice.

I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I don't have any family left,' she continued in a soft voice..'The doctor says I don't have very long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.

'What route would you like me to take?' I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.

We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, 'I'm tired.Let's go now'.
We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.

Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move.
They must have been expecting her.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.

'How much do I owe you?' She asked, reaching into her purse.

'Nothing,' I said

'You have to make a living,' she answered.

'There are other passengers,' I responded.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug.She held onto me tightly.

'You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,' she said. 'Thank you.'

I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light.. Behind me, a door shut.It was the sound of the closing of a life..

I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day,I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver,or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?

On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life.

We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments.

But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

General Discussion Area / Parrots
« on: 02 September 2012, 22:28:24 »
I have thanks to my two boys acquired five, yes five parrots. Anyway one is an African Grey, and one a Bear Eyed Cockatiel. I understand that these two could be worth a fair bit? Anyone know anything about Parrots (as random as that sounds)? I've got them and subsequently got absolutely no where to put them, nor do I think that they will be ideal for my house hold, mainly because I haven't a clue about them, and wouldn't be able to offer them the best care they can get.

General Discussion Area / NHS Parking Ticket
« on: 28 August 2012, 14:26:06 »
Got a parking ticket from the hospital this morning, anyway I've got a parking ticket for parked over two bays. It's from East Kent NHS trust, do I have to pay this, or is it one of these typical tickets like McDonald's.

General Car Chat / Classic car help
« on: 21 August 2012, 22:23:42 »
Right, I've been offered a Jaguar MK7 from 1955, it's a 3.4 and was registered on the 30/03/1955. It's described as in 95% original condition, and it's also up for £45,000, however with a bit of dealing I can get it to cost me roughly half of that. Now, I'm not clued up on classics like this in the slightest, so I will ask people:

1. What's it worth?
2. What do I need to look for?
3. How easy would something like this be to sell?
4. Anything I should be asking?

Thanks in advance  :y.
