Title: England Meets Scotland
Post by: Timbuk on 25 February 2007, 23:25:42
Whilst in Brackley a few of us said how much we would like to meet a few of our nothern friends, obviously easy to say but much harder to organize and find a suitable place to meet. A few ideas were thrown around and Carlisle/ Lake District seemed to be a fairly obvious choice. Would anybody be interested in a weekend meet in this area around June :question

Could do, but it depends on dates as I'll probably be going to San Diego for a few weeks in June.

I am up for that, i think Lake district is probabaly a better venue though, and good drive for the scottish lads, but more traffic for us driving from the south. there would be more camp sites in the Lake district, with quite a few windee roads. Oh and we could to a quick easy climb up scafell pike  :y ;D

Better still Marks DTM could help with mods to a wheelchair, and set motorised pulleys up every 70 feet, and weld the oxygen tanks to the back of the chair :y

Aye, would be willing to have a go with this, date dependant.

Quite happy to camp / BBQ / B&B / whatever.

Being a tight git, camping would be cheaper, leave more cash for beer!!   ;D

If we pick a day which is likely to be decent weather, camping sounds like a plan :y, that way its cheap, and we can bbq and beer it.  Have to pick a campsite that allows this though....

Nice site I know just outside Keswick :

Scotgate, Brathwaite, Keswick, CA12 5TF http://www.scotgateholidaypark.co.uk

Stayed there a few times, reasonable facilites, good for tents or caravans.

North end of the lakes as well, so quieter / nicer than the windermere type places

i'd probably get away with combining them by inviting you all to the BBQ, but no way would going up north be acceptable to SWMBO..... I've got more chance of a cambelt lasting 400000 miles

Post by: MaxV6 on 12 March 2007, 14:31:28
Oh don't worry Mike....  when the time comes, Invites will be sent to all , I couldn't miss you guys out....

(although we don't normally charge for tent space ;)  )

the current garden is less than 1/3 the size of our old one.... (we only moved in october of last year)   so we're going to have to try and adjust our ideas of what will and won't fit....

for starters, my 9m x 3m Party marquee/gazebo thing will now occupy the majority of the lawn space...

We're wondering about seeing if it will go on the back driveway , like a massive version of what we did at Jaime's with our little gazebo-tent thing...

Lake District-ish is fine by me, weekend camping (Fri/Sat) is also OK.  Easy to do a bit of walking or sightseeing as well as partaking of a dry sherry or two of an evening in friendly company, without a jukebox or darts match in the local pub to disrupt the gags.

Reasonable driving roads there and back (excluding M6) for me, centralish location for most?

Hi all,

This sounds like fun, and I should be up for it, depending on what date drops out of the discussion.

What's the general concensus about bringing "other halves"? Are there going to be a few coming along or are we thinking more of a lads' weekend?

Emma would love to come, I'm sure, but she'll probably get a bit bored if it's a load of blokes drinking, kicking tyres and peering at engines. She has to put up with enough of that as it is!  :y

Normally camping trips for us entail a car boot with about 3 cu. ft. of space (enough for tent, sleeping bags and airbed). I think she's trying to work out how many luxuries (multiple shoes and handbags) she can fit in the boot of the Omega.

Cheers,

Kevin

the only weekend in june I DEFINITELY CANNOT do is the 23/24th  , and the 16th/17th isn;t ideal either...

(our Wedding anniversary and annual BBQ party is the weekend of 23/24th , and the Wife's birthday is the 15th )

leaving the last weekend (30th-1st july) or either of the First 2 (2nd/3rd, or 9th/10th)  as being ideal for me.,

So the best looking date all round , so far, would seem to be the weekend of he 9/10th of June.

max .

Lake District in June... well it is a bit far but ok count me in  :)

Speaking as the nearest thing to a local... Keswick has easier access, quiter roads and is less touristy than Bowness.  And the site is on the back of Honister Pass - tight, twisty and fun for those that like that sort of thing  ;)

This place is only 10 mins away from Keswick too http://www.rookinhouse.co.uk/adultactivities.php

They also have a camping barn - http://www.rookinhouse.co.uk/groupaccommodation.php  £200 for 10 people for 2 nights - ie £10 per night.  No beds, but it does have showers and a kitchen.  Prefer tent/caravan myself but it is cheap as chips.

Been away for a few days, just back.

9th/10th June is grand for me, just give me a campsite to throw our tent up and jobs a good 'un.  Not really fussy where, happy to go with local thoughts.  Prefer less kids running around rather than more (its the old fart, pre-granparent gene present in most of us!!) but not really that fussed.  Used to camping in a green field, so no real probs with spade, paper and a box of matches.  And she says the same as well....  Warm showers is a bonus, granted!  Thats what happens when you have been Scouting for too many years......   :P

Park Foot is a very popular site and one thing we havn't considered is availability for such a good turnout, in June is going to be very difficult.  I used to store my Caravan near here and they used to have a Rally field.  Some electric hook ups, showers near by and nice and quiet.  The owner also runs his HGV from a shed on site and it we need any tools he'll have them.  I'll call tomorrow and see if its
free on the 9/10th and feed back when I know.  And yes, the pub is less than a mile away  :)

and yes, matches are for ritual burning of the used paper.  Starts the decomposition process off a treat....   :y

Anyone seen the film Jarhead?  Star of a Vietnam war moovie gets a punishment detail where he has to remove the cut 45 gallon drums full of assorted cr*p and paper etc (known as Honey Buckets, apparently....) from beneath the stalls of the latrines (or bog stalls, to us Brits...  ;)) and then put a good splurge of diesel inthem and set them on fire.  Has to put one back when the C.O. wants to go for a dump, then has to do the deed later.  Ends up getting rat arsed, then dancing around in a santa hat??

Same idea, but the santa hat is an option...   ;D

Ok how many of you guys are taking your wives and children?
I am in the Caravan Club and at the back of the Site Handbook they have a Commercial Sites Section, there are three sites in Kendal and two sites in Keswick. Prices range from £7-£12 per night.

I know in Keswick there is "Cars of the Stars"  http://www.visitcumbria.com/kes/kesmot.htm

I can contact the sites and see if they could accomadate us all if you want me too?
How many do I need to say would be going? :y

I have spoken to the Lady that owns a Camping Site in Keswick.
I asked about 9-10th June for about 15 tents. I told the Lady we were meeting the Scotish members of our Club half way and wondered if they could put us all up, also told her we were all about 40..... that some of us were bringing wives and children.
She said that it would be £5 per person per night children would be less, but asked if i could call tomorrow with a more definate amount of people then she could give me a price.

So fellas could do with knowing if you think this site is suitable...
It has a toilet block and laundry facilities, didn't ask how close the nearest pub was but will ask.... Anyone think of anything else that need to ask?
As anyone else booked a place as don't want to double booking!

Cheers Daz

Found this site too a little more expensive than the other but there are showers, a licenced resturant and bar and childrens play area (for us who take are kids).
I was only going to take our girls who are 11 and 8 if there are any other children going.

We went to the Cars of the Stars about 12 years ago and the new Bat mobile was there but not on show, so i said that we had come from Stoke-on-Trent to see it, so this women went off and came back with a bloke with dark hair. I told him the same and he took us over this rope fence to this Huge wooden door and into a big garage sort of thing with a cover over something in the centre.. he pulled back the cover and there it stood the New Batmobile!!!!
It seemed so long but very narrow, and the bloke who turned out to be the owner was tell us how it is difficult to see when driving, and i am pretty sure he said i was bumped up when filming.....
Just thought I'd share that with ya!! ;D :y

Nearest Travel Lodge to Keswick is off J40 at Penrith - only 15 miles away via A66 direct.  Also lots of B&B in Keswick too.

Nearest hospital 20 miles - only 10 mins if you let The Boy drive  :y

I've done a search on the Caravan Club website and come up with this alternative.

http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/Planning+your+trip/UK+Trips/Site+Search+and+Book/Club+Sites/Site+Detail.htm?csid=PARK+COPPICE&site=-1&region=Cumbria&county=Cumbria&facilities=TentCampersWelcome%3bToiletBlock%3b&arrivalDate=9-Jun-2007&departureDate=10-Jun-2007&dateFlexibility=0

It has toilets, showers, washing machine, tumble dryer, and its 400 yards from Coniston Water with it's own launch point for dinghys etc - or my 2 man inflatable canoe  8-)

But don't get excited cos the office is closed until 11am tomorrow so I dont know if its free or available to non club members.  I'll ask and update tmz.  And yes I am a member :-[

No tents at Park Coppice - but spaces for caravans no problem that weekend. Owner suggested this:

Within 1m though there is a site called Coniston Hall - tents only, no caravans.

http://somewherenear.com/idx.cgi?sessionkey=4620a8e84c88&rlimit=10&east=330801&north=495952&unique_id=3919&placetype=3&o-east=330401&o-north=496297&a=show&zoom=1

Both have showers, toilets and access to the lake and the Tent site is specifially ideal for groups - owner just asks that quiet after 11pm.

So, plan could be to spilt sites but all meet up in Tent venue, have BBQ etc and then walk back up the road to caravan for bed.  Map of Tent site has reference to Park Coppice, which shows how near it is.

Spaces availble at both, I'm looking at bringing my daughter 11 with me in van and staying over Friday 8th and Sat 9th at Park Coppice.  I obviously won't book until we decide where we going as Keswick and Bowness are still options.  So lets decide soon or there may be nowhere to stay. :)

Much prefer Keswick to Boness, much less touristy, the Scotgate Site i mentioned earlier may well fit the bill.

Seen groups there before, and bbq's, and pub 2 mins walk away.

TB - BBQ's Yes - Open fires No.

Jimbob - Is the site at Keswick free for about 10 tents and say 2 caravans?  I assume you are staying in a van rather than tent with the nipper.  Coniston as mentioned above is quiter than Bowness but has enough going on, as does Keswick.

Just checked the website, and they dont take bookings

They also state they dont take groups, although last time I was there, a motorboke group was there.

I guess if lots of people turn up individually, you are not a group as such, ie not the scouts or guides etc.

Dogs are allowed though

Rental vans appear to be weekly, and not cheap.

Hi there,

If there is anybody still requiring a tent for the meet then feel free to contact me.  I have a 4/6 man three section tent, I got it from a friend and I have never used it, don't know what it is like but should be good because said friend is v keen on camping.  Could also get Chopsdad to pick it up because he is in Carlisle aswell.  I wont be able to make it to the meet because that is my weekend working.  My numbers are 01228 540758 or 07723 356424. Probably have to leave a message as I always seem to miss phone calls.  One day I will turn up for something.

Well I am up for it to.....idealy the 9/10 of June....

If we need camping kit then worry not......I am the treasurer of a local scout group.....so we have everything from 3 man domes to a couple of mess tents....

Snap....   ;D

Could also bring a 20' x 40' white marquee.....  Could get a LOT of cars in there to work on...  ;D
Anyone with latreen digging skills could even produce a couple of inspection pits ;)

Thanks

No problem from me picking this tent up - I may even ask my daughter if she fancies canvas vs caravan?  I'll ring Coniston site tomorrow and ask if we can pre book and all set up together - with option of larger tent for some quiet repairs etc and see how she reacts.  I may also be going to Keswick at the weekend and if so I could drop in and take some pics of the site etc and ask the same q's.  I'll PM Jimbob for details.

:y  for the booking thing.  We need to get something fairly concrete so all can arrange around it.

The marquee thing was a wee bit tongue in cheek, but can certainly bring a smaller (20' x 10') mess tent.  That fits in the car but the marquee needs a trailer and half a dozen blokes with an hour or so to put up.  Don't think a site owner would be too happy for largish scale works on her site and the pitch fees for a chunk of canvas that size would be a fair bit, methinks......  ::)

OK here's the latest.

I spoke to both site owners today and have the following to add:

Keswick "No lad, no groups!" but I did manage to talk the old boy around and he said it might be ok, but we'd be on the 'alternative' site, which is adjacent to the A66 - tents only.  It does have showers and toilets.  Probably free 9/10 June no no pre-bookings and not keen on the size of the turnout, so would not commit to booking.

Coniston "That's a lot of people and I'd need a guarantee that you would be quiet after 11pm as we have a lot of families here" "Of course, we're bringing some kids too" I replied  :-X "In that case no problem, you can pre-book and we will arrange to site you all together - just give me a ring with numbers of pitches needed and people per tent"

My big concern regarding Keswick is the uncertainty - tbh if I was driving as far as you guys I'd want to know I defo had somewhere to sleep, rather than driving 15 miles in any direction looking for another site after 5 hours behind the wheel.

Coniston is tourisy and busier, but is in the heart of the Lakes and very picturesque. It is queier than Bowness and Windermere and fine for a base to explore.  See map http://www.aboutbritain.com/maps/coniston-map.asp

As a "local" I'd plump for Coniston Hall, for 3 reasons.  1: Pre-booking available. 2: Owner seems more tolerant of our group and 3: I haven't been for ages :y

I have emailed another Keswick site http://www.burns-farm.co.uk/pageController.php just to keep our options open

Sometimes it pays to be less than honest..... :-X

Conniston or wherever.....  As long as we have a pitch with a shower and a bog within walking distance, we're happy.  Not so happy if its within throwing distance of a main trunk route or the local pubs outside smoking area or toilet....   ;)

You looking for deposits up front?  I certainly would be!

OK after a long think I propose KESWICK as our venue at Burns farm.

The owner can site us all together with tents and vans, it ticks all the boxes asked so far and transport links are far easier than Coniston and the owner is the friendliest so far.

The nearest pub is 1m away - along a country lane and the only condition is that we are quiet at night, which seems par for the course.

So lets start a rolling list of who is coming, how many in your party, tent or caravan, which nights and I'll then collect bookings and secure the site.

Please keep next post simple for me to understand  :y

Unfortunately, supermop (Greg) can't make it as he's off to Ibiza that weekend. Also, I can only provisionally say yes at the moment as it's about the same time I'm due to pick up my new car (more about that another time) and I may have a long journey to go and get it and a lot of money to part with ::). If I can make it, I'll probably bring a mate.

If anyone would be able to lend a hand to get the tent up, that would be appreciated :y

Also are dogs allowed?

Dogs are allowed but no statics.  IIRC Broocie has 2 spare tents up for grabs.

Might not be a good idea then..... :( ....my mutt will find a way out if she wants....shes too nosey....plus i like a bed....my days of sleeping on the ground are long gone  ::)

Wrynose and Hardknott passes with the TC turned off  ;D then back for more burgers?

I went to the "Cars of the Stars" museum last year and it's interesting but it'll only kill an hour or so IMO.

Walking / Sailing?

Hi guys.
Regarding things to bring, i do have a large gazobo thingy with sidewalls etc that i am more than willing to bring along if the site owners have no objections to use erecting and providing some folk will help in the erection department................of the gazebo that is :o I also have a largish gas BBQ as previously mentioned. If needed that again i am more than willing to bring along, maybe someone could bring an additional gas bottle? Let me know if either are required.
Cheers and heres to a wobbly weekend, Jez :y

I think M_DTM said he could bring a friggin great tent. Trouble is, what the site owners say...

I am possibly going to be tight for space, as those who know Mrs TheBoy know she like to take the kitchen sink.

I will be bringing most of my usual camping stuff, including cooker and fridge...  ...won't have room for BBQ, though could always get some disposable ones locally...

OK.  Tentage.....

Previously half serious and half joking, but......   I can supply a Big Boys gazeebo....  If there is a DEFINATE need (Judging by the numbers, yes there probably is), I can bring a 20 foot by 40 foot white marquee which will take ALL of us easily for any evening get together and, if required, be able to accomodate loads of cars under cover for essential repairs.  Could also bring a few tables and benches as well as cooking range etc??  It would need someone local to sound out the site owner as its a LARGE tent, the kind of thing your local village has on the cricket pitch for the annual Fete that you sassenachs always seem to have....   ;D

Will need a fair bit of muscle to erect and unsure of what it would cost, site fee wise, but it is a viable alternative and a free hire to the forum, within reason.  Would include a small propane jet burner (needs 240 volts, have small 2 stroke genny needing refurb) and a couple of gas hot water heaters so boiling brew on hand 24/7 as long as someone (not me, doctors orders!) ensured the water bottles were kept refilled....

I would need an answer sooner rather than later as I would need to arrange trailer etc.

Over to the masses for comment and I will go by the general feeling.

ps - Not bringing it would keep my fuel consumption into the twenties or thirties, rather than the teens as it needs the twin axle trailer to hump all that kit........   :y

I'm planning on paying a visit to the site soon, just to remind her that we OWN the farm for the weekend and she may as well turn everyone else away.

That way we can be noisy after 10 and not get told off :-[

If not this weekend it will be next. :y

In the increasingly unlikely event that i'm not working , I will attempt to appear as if by magic , possibly along with the mrs...

I'd much rather be able to be definite about it one way or the other, but work load and production deadlines  have well and truly thrown brown sticky smelly stuff at the rotating cooling device of late....

i'm still in the middle of building my new Studio...  and am having to juggle contracted delivery obligations between editing in the middle living room, and mixing in another studio near Banbury....   as well as try and build my place...

if Sony (or anyone else) (sorry TB) ask for so much as one bloody more edit and mix change because some director or producer  has suddenly had a creatively "inspired"  insight...  I won't have a single full day off between now and august....

I'm tired, and the Meega is still sulking with a mysterious slight coolant leak....

Should it be possible to appear at all., then i will of course bring some stuff to throw at a BBQ.... :D  and a tent or sleeping bag or something...

Max

It's not far away now and I have a few PM's asking what to bring etc and some very kind offers from Gas BBQ's to steak so I've started another thread for just such a list....http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1179354052/0#0

So is this panning out to be a camping weekend in the lakes?

I might be in and I could bring a big tin tent - with a beer fridge  ;).

Though i may be dragged along by a Saab as the Omega is still MOT-less.

I will not choose a date as I'm such a new newbie, I'd rather go with the flow [if I can].

Ummm.....Who's got the cleanest Vectra?  ;D

Actually unless i buy another Vectra estate next week, i'll be bringing the Omega....i dont fancy driving all that way with labrador lounging on the back seats.....if i have to break hard  :'(

So how about.....who can drink a case of stella (24 tinnies) and still walk back to the B&B  :D ;D

Or how about....the most upgraded Omega? ie adding upgrades that your model didnt have....ie cruise/ice (but must be vx upgrade)/auto dipping rear view mirror/electric rear blind/etc/etc......ok you stand no chance if you've got an Elite .....but might be a bit of fun.....and shows that the owner has spent time/money upgrading their omega.....couple of free shandies to the winner?  ;)

I wont win, coz the only thing that ive added is cruise  ::)

She and the 3 Month old will join us on Saturday, in a hire car

My car won't be coming at all :(
Most of it's engine is in the boot, and my mechanic has buggered off to the TT
I've only heard 2nd Hand where he is up to, he thinks the leak is a pipe under the thermostat he can't seem to get out.  Make sense to anyone?
