Diamond Black Geezer

Are these bulbs by any chance marked in red, I took this photo some time ago when I had the instrument cluster out for some other issue ages ago.

Hi GastronomicKleptomaniac

If only it were that simple, nah no chance, it's a bit difficult taking photos in the dark but for what its worth take a look at the image I've uploaded especially where I've maked it in red.

But thank you for your prompt reply

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Onboard Display Gone Dim
« on: 29 July 2018, 22:06:01 »
Hi Guys

The onboard screen display has gone dim but only on the one half, all of the diodes are still working in so far as there are no missing segments.
Does anyone have any idea what wrong with it?

Thanks for your help

Omega General Help / Re: Air Con Screw
« on: 04 July 2018, 22:59:30 »
Hello Lee

Sorry I’m a bit late answering, many thanks for the lowdown I have to admit it is a bit difficult trying to find things out about specific compressors but I suppose at the end of the day I could do just as you say see what happens ie if the gap is too wide the clutch simply won’t engage so just keep reducing the spacer thickness until it does.

When I took the car in to get the refrigerant evacuated they told me there was none in the system I guess it must have leaked out so heaven knows how I going to find out how much needs to go back in and from what I’ve read it’s quite a science.

Hello Keith

Thank heavens it didn't do a lot of damage lol.
Have you fixed it all yet or got rid of it.

Iv'e got the facelift model year 2000 so I'm not sure if what you have will fit mine unless someone can advise otherwise.
Sorry about the one photo fellas I'm still trying to get use to uploading images

I did the sketch but had the headache of finding a website where I could upload the photos for free, I did use Photobucket which is no longer free and photos that have been posted on forums through them are no longer visible, what a bind that is.

I have tried a couple of breakers one being called breakersyard.com without much success, I was thinking these Omegas are getting that old now especially the diesel I’ll be lucky to find anything.

So, I got to thinking why buy a compressor if it’s just a simple thing like a screw and spacer which has gone missing.

I’ve got to say to everyone on here who replied, I have just seen the light how stupid can one be.
I’ve just been watching a youtube video only to discover it’s not the whole clutch which slides along the splines of the shaft as I thought, heaven knows where I got that idea from.
I wear varifocals so if anyone asks why I thought that I’m going to swear blind I was looking through the wrong part of the lenses lol.

The one part of the clutch doesn’t move at all, it’s just the outer part that does all the moving in and out towards the driven pulley.

I’ve just run another check on the compressor with it off the car only to find clutch is not moving, when I connected some jumper leads from a battery onto the two pins of the plug it arched as though there was some kind of short, so I’ve done a resistance test with a multimeter and came up with a reading of 0.8 ohms.
I’m guessing that’s bad news because on a couple of American cars on youtube they are talking about the resistance should be between 3 to 5 ohms.

Maybe it would be cheaper just to simple ride around with windows open if its too hot inside the car.

Hi Doctor Gollum

Thanks for your reply, Iv'e watched one or two youtube videos and most of the clutches are simply held on by a big screw with a spacer washer, I just wish I could get hold of an exploded view of the omega set up.
I don't want to go to the trouble of buying the complete compressor for such a small item.

Omega General Help / Air Con Screw
« on: 29 June 2018, 22:25:07 »
Hi guys

First off, I’m talking about a Vauxhall Omega 2.5TD, the one with the six cylinder lump in it.

It’s got to be worth a try, I need a replacement screw and spacing washer for the clutch on my air con compressor.
I’ve tried an ordinary M6 screw but it just locks everything up once its tighten so I assume the screw must be a bit special, because it should allow the clutch to slide along the spline shaft once the air con is switched on.

Does anyone out there have the correct screw they want sell or the compressor, I don’t care if the compressor is knackered as it’s just the screw I’m after, or if someone just happens to have their compressor off and doesn’t mind posting a view pics and some measurements of the screw I’ll try and get one made.

Thanks to anyone who can help

Omega General Help / Air Con Clutch Fallen Off
« on: 25 June 2018, 11:48:57 »
Hi Guys

Can anyone shed some light please, I’ve got a Vauxhall Omega Estate 2.5TD, it’s the one with the 6 cylinder BMW lump in it.
I’m guessing the fit may be the same as petrol Omega’s as far as the air con is concerned.

Right, the clutch has fallen off the air con compressor, luckily I did not loose it however the fixing screw and I assume spacer washer have gone missing, no doubt dropped off along the road somewhere.
The only thing I can’t figure out is how the darn thing screws onto the air con compressor shaft.
I can see an M6 tapped hole in the shaft and tried putting a screw in it but when tightened it locks the whole thing up in other words it clamps the clutch hard against the rotating pulley meaning the compressor is running all the time the engine is running irrespective if the air con is switched on or not.
I also noticed the clutch has an M8 tapped hole in the middle of it, does anyone out there know what the fixing screw looks like and the spacer washer thickness.

Thanks to anyone who can sort me out.

Omega General Help / Re: Viscous Fan Removal

Hello Doctor Gollum

Thanks for the quick reply I'll give that a go tomorrow, I just need to find a way of stopping the water pump from turning at the same time.

Omega General Help / Viscous Fan Removal
« on: 12 June 2018, 19:35:06 »
Hi Guys

First off I'm talking about an Omega 2.5TD the one with the 6 cylinder BMW lump in it.

If standing outside the car looking straight at the windscreen which way do I need to turn the nut in order to remove the viscous fan?
I believe it's a left hand thread, but I'm still not sure if it needs turning anticlockwise or clockwise in order to get the fan off?

Thanks for your help

Update on the sensor

The one I placed on order with www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk met the same fate turns out they couldn't get one, it is now no longer listed on their website.

Anyway at the risk of showing myself up  :-[, I tested the whole thing again.

I took the sensor out of the cylinder head, disconnected the cable which connects onto it, got two jumper leads, connected one between the cable I had just pulled off the sensor and the sensor itself, so I'd got enough length of cable to allow me to dangle the sensor in some hot water.
Connect the second jumper lead between the sensor body and grounded the other end of it.

Dangled the sensor in a cup of very hot water, Verdict, didn't the temperature gauge start to move, tried it a few times and yes every time I did it the gauge moved.
Don't you just hate problems like that.
I had previously tested the sensor on it's own with a multi-meter and cup of hot water and I did get different resistance readings as the water cooled down, but I didn't know what parameters the sensor was supposed to work within, so assumed it wasn't working correctly.

I was thinking where the heck do I go from here, then a light bulb came on, no not in the car the one in my head.

I disconnected the jumper between the sensor and the cable which pushes onto it, did a continuity test between the cable and the car ground and sure enough I got continuity.
It wasn't until I waggled the cable about a bit did I not get continuity, bingo a darn broken wire which was making and breaking, I soldered a new section of wire in and at last the water temperature gauge is working again  :y.

So I didn't need a replacement sensor after all, but I don't think I would have had any luck trying to track down a new one
I even tried  www.brit-car.co.uk an independent Land Rover parts specialists, same answer, no joy.

Thanks again fellas for taking the time to offer your suggestions, all of them were greatly appreciated and I hope my little saga will come in useful for anyone else with similar issues.

Cheers

Clive
