Radio and steering wheel upgrade
« on: 09 March 2018, 11:15:11 »

I'm wanting to fit an aftermarket radio to my 03 2.2 dti cdx. Nothing wrong with original radio but I'd like one I can connect phone to for calls and play music through. Should I upgrade the speakers when Im at it? Also is it possible to swap the steering wheel for one that will control the phone and radio? If so what am I looking for and how big of a job is it?

When I fitted a Blaupunkt radio I used an Autoleads adapter that allows the Omega steering wheel buttons to control the radio.

I would have thought that changing the steering wheel would be a non starter because of the air-bag :-\

Speakers need replacing more then the head unit imo.

Are you saying that your car is a CDX and it hasn't got steering controls for the radio that's fitted ?
Iifc, the auto leads unit can be either preset to the car OR the steering wheel buttons can be programed in manually to replicate a button on the headunit  :y
My alpine unit is setup using the preset which lets me change source, track up or down and volume up or down.
On the OEM steering wheel controls, you have 6 buttons so 1 is spare.  Whether you can manually program that button to operate as a pick up / put down for the hands free I don't know but is on my long list of things to try on my car  :-[

Does the steering wheel control the phone as well though? As that,s what the OP wants it to do. :-\

When I am on a hands-free call the volume control buttons on the steering wheel adjust the phone volume.

If you want to initiate a call then you had better be using voice activation - no one should be dialling phone numbers while driving.....

The steering wheel is standard and has the 6 buttons, if I can program the bottom left button to answer/drop calls that will do for me. Saves any hassle. If I go for a Dab unit will I need to change the aerial as well?

Depends on what HU and steering wheel adapter you go for.  The buttons don't do anything clever, just provide a signal as to which button is pressed, to the steering wheel adapter, and it then up to the adapter/HU combo as to what that means.

That said, I've never seen anything that puts in anything other than what steering wheel icons suggest.

That's what I need to try on mine  :y

Yes, some come with the head unit some don't.
If you get a L shaped stick on one, put it at the top corner / passenger side of the windscreen but make sure the strip is below the sun strip as I believe it contains metallic bits which will reduce the strength of the signal.
You can also run the phone mic up that corner and bring it out just to the right of the interior light  :y

I put one of these in last year without the remote and love it  :y :y

I've always gone for Pioneer, Kenwood or Alpine.
Personally, i'd go with the Alpine because they tend not to be too flashy and the amp stages tend to be second to non.

This looks like the double din version of mine  :y

As for head units and speakers, in most cases you get what you pay for  ;)
I'd Pm, DaveDND for his opinion because he fits the stuff for a living  :y
