Title: Formula 1 British Grand Prix. SPOILER ALERT !!
Post by: Migv6 le Frog Fan on 14 July 2019, 16:28:09
I know F1 has massive underlying problems, but today at Silverstone it produced a superb race. Im sure even TB enjoyed it.
Wheel to wheel battles all over the place and Hamilton winning a record 6th British GP.
Couldn't have asked for much more. :)
Time for Vettel to hang up his helmet I think. Hes now so desperate Im almost embarrassed for him.  :D ::)

Why anyone would want to watch the grass grow at the tennis or cricket is beyond me.  ::)

In order to avoid the whole shite, including the traffic issues this week and next, I've ensured I'm an awful long way from it ;)

I believe this year is the last one there :)

Great race. Felt sorry for Lando.

10 sec penalty when already at back of field. That is a joke.

I thought Silverstone had resigned for six? Years more with F1.

Its possible I've missed something, but I thought they were trying to wiggle out of it, using a break in the contract, due to costs.

Five year deal signed four days ago.

It would have been unthinkable not to have Silverstone in the calendar. At one point they were planning a stupid London race.

I always much preferred Brands Hatch, but elf n safety would never allow them to race there now.
Yep, Vettels penalty was a joke. He should have got a one race ban imo.

5..........not a million miles from 7

Bit jammy with the safety car.
WTF were Mercedes thinking about, pit stopping him with five laps to go?

One race ban would have been more appropriate. Trouble is the fans would be denied him racing.

Maybe best thing for everyone would be for Vettel to hang up his gloves during the summer recess and for Ferarri to hire Alonso for the rest of the season. He could help bring on Leclerc too. Plenty of good up and coming drivers to fill the spot next year.

They had to pit Bottas as he chose to run the same tyres on the first stop. Maybe he didnt like the uncertainty of different tyres ? Plus the game plan would be to get one point for fastest lap on those new tyres. Shame Hamilton did it on old tyres. The mark of a great driver.

Or, at least, the penalty to be applied at the next Grand Prix.

My daughter went there for the weekend with her 3 kids, where the middle one, whose 10th birthday is tomorrow, is mad on F1 & that was his birthday treat. Callum in years to come will be able to say, I was there when history was being made. :y :y :y

Vettel after his number 1 driver track position advantage where Leclerc has to yield is now only 3 points ahead of him in the drivers standings. Not sure Vettel will cope with the pressure here on in. :-[ :-X ;D

From what I've heard, there were 20 laps or so where Leclerc and Max were going at it well. Silverstone is normally around 70 laps?

I think it should be wheel to wheel, flat out, no stops, hell for leather, biggest balls wins, for the complete whole race. Without false aids.

Ferrari must surely be asking themselves if it is worth the millions they are paying him to keep underperforming.
They could get Lando Norris or George Russell for a fraction of what Vettel costs them.
Leclerc has now settled into the team, so they could take a chance on a new young talent.

Yeah I did  :o

Commentators response was brilliant though:

V: 'What was he doing'
C: 'Slowing down for a corner'

 ;D ;D

It's always someone else's fault with Vettel.

Meanwhile...………………..its just been announced that they are going to bring back ground effect in 2021 to solve the current problems of F1 racing.
Cant for the life of me see how that's going to help, but we hall see.  ???
Title: Re: Formula 1 British Grand Prix. SPOILER ALERT !!
Post by: Varche on 17 July 2019, 13:38:47
Did you see the Lotus 79 on Top Gear.? That was the first ground effects F1 car and romped away from the opposition.

Maybe ground effects will make the car more driveable in the wake of the car you are trying to get past.  Maybe it will just be the same as now. Faster perhaps but still not able to overtake.

Imo that was the point where it all started to go wrong. Aero took precedence over everything else after that.

Quite. The aero efficiency needs to be reduced, so proper racing can happen.  All ground effects will do is allow the car behind to get in the 1s false overtaking threshold.

Jean Todt wants to reintroduce refuelling to improve the racing ! It would improve the chances of strategists winning races rather than the fastest drivers / cars, but maybe he thinks it will give Ferrari a better chance of winning again ?  :-\
Personally I would see it as several steps away from real racing and further into Walt Disney territory.  ::)

I think they should bring it back pre-war Le Mans style - using a bloke with a jerry can in one hand and a funnel in the other. Oh, and the obligatory fag in his mouth. Should liven things up a bit. :y

It wasn't a great race by any means (although that Irish nobead presenter on C4 said it was the greatest race he had ever seen !  ::) ) - but it was extraordinary in many different ways.
The biggest shock for me, apart from Hamilton making a human mistake, was the complete chaos in the Mercedes pit when he arrived unexpectedly. It was like Laurel & Hardy meets the Chuckle Brothers.  :o

I used to go up to Dalby forest regularly in my teenage years. In those days no barriers.  An awful lot of the local access roads have been closed off to vehicles. Object in principle “ as a local” to paying even though I haven't lived there ( Wykeham forest) for nearly fifty years.  :-[ Still plenty of good walking. Lots of history too. The Romans and stone age man were active in the area. There are rabbit types too from when wild rabbits were farmed. We have boxes of flint arrow heads, Roman coins that are two a penny and even a Roman ring.

Great call on Mercedes to bring him in for fresh tyres, clearly number crunchers there on their game.

Approaching the point Bottas will have to yield now and just play No2 driver, I hope they renew him though. Seb Ocon always comes across, as a bit of a idiot  :-\

It was a good call from Mercedes to roll the dice, but it only really worked out the way it did because Hamilton drove over 20 qualifying laps in a row. I don't think any of the others would have been capable of doing that tbh.
Verstappen is very good, but imo he isn't the complete package that Hamilton is, but he might be in the future.
Talk by Horner and Rosberg at the weekend of Verstappen now being the best driver in F1 was ludicrous imo.
Title: Re: Formula 1 British Grand Prix. SPOILER ALERT !!
Post by: Varche on 06 August 2019, 15:53:12
I feel sorry for Bottas, he can string together a fast qualifying session but lacks ultimate racecraft.

Alonso had his critics but on opening laps , even in a mediocre car , he made up places where feel for car on full tanks, cool tyres and brakes is essential. There are only a handfull of the top twenty that display that ability

I am not sure that Ocon has that anymore than Bottas but the teams  have to think the long  game i.e. after Lewis, Sebastion have gone into retirement. Orlando Norris is shaping up well.

Depends if Toto wants someone wants someone capable of consistently challenging Hamilton or not. Not many drivers could, and Bottas is probably is near as any most could manage, apart from Verstappen. Even if Verstappen wanted to go to Mercedes (which I think unlikely) , Toto then has to consider the inevitable headaches and problems that would come with having them both in his team.

It is all about succession planning. No reason why Hamilton cant win another handful of championships before retiring. In the meantime they need to bring on a successor ( someone who can learn from hamilton) to take the reins. ( or should I say reigns). Bottas is nearly at F1 retiring age too and just is not cutting the moutarde as you would say. He can string together a fast enough quali lap but is rubbish at the racecraft. Like Gasly

True enough, and in that case young Ocon would make more sense.  :y
I suspect Hamilton would like to bear all Scummies records and then finish his career at Ferrari, as apparently all racing drivers want that as part of their legacy. Don't think he will go there yet though, as hes smart enough to know that he is unikely to win much in a Ferrari.

He pushed Hamilton off the track at high speed. Hamilton has never done that to anyone in his life.
I wouldn't be surprised if Vettel retires at the end of the year. His confidence is gone and his time is up. Happens to most of them in the end. The guard has changed at Ferrari and he has nowhere else to go.

If the positions were reversed, you'd be praising Hamilton for his great defensive driving. I thought Leclerc played a blinder.

No I wouldn't. A big part of why I like Hamilton as much as I do, is the fact that he not only wins but he wins the right way. He is skilled enough to be millimetre perfect when racing against other cars and is always very hard but very fair. Its not just the winning that matters to him. Its winning fair and square which is important. That's why he is leagues ahead of Schumacher, Vettel etc. imo.
If he nerfed someone off the road at high speed, I would be disappointed and say so.
Hamilton said afterwards that the only thing that stopped keeping his foot in and risking an accident was that he has the championship in mind. Which might mean he has a lesson to teach young Leclerc once the title is wrapped up.
Should mean some good racing ahead hopefully.

Vettel got worst driver of the day award. Very poor showing. Next time it will be a one race ban.....

Nice to see Leclerc do well - he withstood Hamilton and Bottas’s attacks but I agree his driving was questionable. FIA ( ferrari international assistance ) was in play again.

Singapore should better suit the Red Bulls. Max hopefully will be on the podium. Still not sure about Albon but he does show more attacking spirit than Ghasly did.
