Meh, it all depends on what was on your syllabus at school.

I notched up an A at history GCSE and a decent enough academic record since and had to Google the answer. My long term memory is pretty good and I'm 90-95% sure it was never formally taught to me.

Realistically, the ability to recall facts is fack all use outside of a game show. Particularly in the real world where facts are freely available to anyone with thumbs.

That is spot on Jimmy about recalling facts outside a gameshow being useless.

Now everything is available at the touch of a finger.  We live in a new world.

1215.

Yes, but that Magna Carta only remained a legal document for three months, when the Pope Innocence III denounced it, making it null and void, as it had been signed by King John under duress.

It was the 1225 version that came into law, signed by boy King Henry III in return for tax concession.  He re-issued a shortened version when he reached adulthood in 1227, and it was parts of that which was the first to be recognised in English law.  However, it is the 1297 version, signed by King Edward I that has parts still recognised by current English Law.

Therefore, if the question asked during Who Wants to be a Millionaire was simply "who signed the Magna Carta?", and not "What King signed the first Magna Carta in 1215?", then various answers would be valid! ::) ;D ;)

When I did history at school, back before the turn-up-and-you'll-pass GCSEs came along, history seemed to be more about geography, and I can honestly say I cant remember learning about kings and queens and battles in secondary* school

*although my secondary school seemed to be more about learning how to take a hot muffin.

That was a shame TB :(

As I have said before on the forum, I was lucky enough to first have a father who loved history and enjoyed bringing it to life, then I had two history teachers in succession that had a passion for the subject and got great pleasure in teaching / explaining it to us lesser mortals :D :D ;)

Geography was always a separate subject, that was also blessed by teachers who also thoroughly had a passion for their subject :)

the actual date & location was mentioned in the question , so john as one of the options i assumed some one that has a uni degree in history would know the answer.
