Any size would do as you only need a small amount. Or use the grey sealant available from the dealers. But the 5900 is what they use at the VX plant.

One you've drained all the oil and undone all the bolts, leave the drain pan underneath the sump pan when you're trying to seperate the pan from the block. This will catch the pan if it drops unexpectedly or it will hang on the sensor cable. Clean both mating surfaces with a degreaser and remove previous silicone (obviously) and I would personally leave it overnight before you add oil, especially if using VX grey sealant but the 5900 supposedly cures quicker.

Clean the oil strainer once you have the sump off (may aswell). It looked to me to be held on by 4 bolts but andyc informed me it was 3 bolts.

A couple of pictures, thanks to v6man36deg and second is mine: Sump bolts are 20Nm I'm informed by v6man as he used to work in the VX plant.

No idea, first pic isn't mine but at a guess I would say its a full size tube because he used to work for VX so they would have plenty of it. IMO, 50ml would be enough. The tube I bought off andyc was 80ml and I have just over half left so I used around 35ml.

No problem  :y

Is the 50ml tube from eBay with the syringe? Just saw it on there myself. Very good value for money IMO, grey sealant costs £8+ on TC for 80ml and its not as good. Might get a tube myself when I do the oil strainer

Interestingly, I've been putting off buying a 300ml cartridge as I know I won't need that much, and over £30 is a lot to spend when you're going to end up throwing most of it away. I'd got to the point of trying normal clear silicone as it's always done the job for me in the past(as suggested to me by an Ilmor engine builder who said that the only gasket in those engine are the head gaskets; everything else is Dow Corning 797 clear).

So, I've just ordered one of those small tubes to fit the Vectra sump to my 3.0l hot rod engine.

Right get ready to be slaged off. :-\
Good quality silicon sealer stays plyable to approx 1000'c,
A lot of engine builders use it for sumps, camcovers, exhaust, and all other gaskets, just a nice thin bead or a smear and it dosnt seem to worry them, when they are building engines which cost £5k and up.
yes i do use it for exhausts as it dosnt dry like concrete and hinder disassembly, and used it for cam covers instead of vx sealent.
. Lots of threads on other forums about using silicone sealents as gaskets.

The important thing to remember is to use clear silicone for high temperature applications, as it has no pigment to burn.
A quick test is to put a big blob of clear silicone on an exhaust manifold; it will be there for ages, whereas coloured doesn't last long.

I don't think you can/should use black sealant on the sump, I don't know the science behind, I'll leave it to someone else to explain why

Someone had used some kind of silicon sealant on the sump of SWMBO Smart. Where it had oozed through on the inside of the sump, it'd become very soft, broke away & partialy blocked the oil pump filter. The last tube of grey sealant I bought from Vaux (for said Smart sump) was around £9/£10 IIRC Easier to buy the right one IMHO
