On my previous shed, I upgraded the audio system quite a bit 

Kenwood minidisc player / Infinity reference speakers all round.

Now, Imo the sound in the new car is pretty crap so I'm looking to upgrade it (without breaking the bank) 

I will be transplanting the Infinity speakers into the new car (which should help) but I'm struggling with audio input since there is no way I'm going to get a minidisc player in a facelift 

I've seen these hard wired FM transmitters which you can plug your iPod / phone into but has anybody seen one which will allow a stand alone usb solid state hardrive with a stand alone display.
Does anything like that exist out there ?

I'm also looking to fit a small subwoofer into the rear to fill out the bass a little.
The idea is to fit a small 8" ish sub in the side where the OEM Bose sub is fitted.
Has anybody done anything similar ?

All sensible idea's welcome

Can't use your Inifinity speakers unless they are 2 Ohm when you Have Bose fitted.

Are we talking Estate here?

Yup 

The car has a lpg tank in place of the spare wheel.
Sticking a shelf in there is a no no because I need threw space for my tools and the dog would probably eat it anyway

Couple of options on the Sub Base, the Bose Sub Box enclosure is about 10 litres from memory so is quiet usable if you wanted to replace the speaker itself with something a bit more modern, if you wanted to have a play, the Bose Sub speaker is dual coiled so in theory could be made onto 4 Ohms with some trickery.

Another option is what I did on my first Estate, which is put a couple of small Subs in the Tailgate area and replace most of the rear panel with a wooden baffle then sealed around the edges, sounded  good.

Don't fancy the tailgate option tbh.
Not with me banging the tailgate up and down 20 times a day

No pics, did it in my early Mig years before I joined OOF, did work quiet well though, managed to get hold of some slim 8" that were mounted on some home made spacers behind the Baffle, then the holes on the baffle were about 5" from memory with some metal covers on the front, the trick was to make sure the speaker cone and surround didn't hit the Baffle, if you know what I mean, had all sorts of work stuff flying around in the back but is still lasted the course.
