Right.

Blocking hoses would stop coolant circulation. Also, as the temp sensor is near where you blocked hose, thats possibly is giving false reading as coolant will be stagnant there.

No water in oil is a good sign.

Are the fumes you can smell oily fumes, or exhaust fumes?

Oil cooler is located in the V between the cylinder banks , buried under everything , but by all accounts not a bad job to do . :y[/quote]

Oil cooler is like a small rad which sits in the coolant between the cylinder banks , this can corrode over time and will leak oil into the surrounding coolant . Oil looks free of water so would still be my best guess . :-/

i called a shop to get a qoute on the price of doing a cylinder compressions test.. 50 bucks... same price as the test its self :-/

The guy i talked to was also kind enough to enlighten me about how much he hates cateras and how badly designed they are!

Ok, I would say pretty categorically that your oil cooler is goosed, along with you breather system being completely blocked.

I would forget the head gasket, the car would be a LOT worse if it was that.

Change oil cooler and cam cover seals (use proper GM parts and sealant or order from UK and get them shipped).

Completely clean the breather system out, I suspect this is causing the odd smells as the fumes can't vent.

Flush the coolant out VERY thoroughly and then run though a few solutions of water soluble degreasant (Jizer, Gunk etc).
Check the state of coolant hoses. If the are soft and "squishy", replace them before they fail. Particularly check the main hoses at the back of the engine (they tend to get over looked).

Oh, and change the oil more regularly! That is not good.
Remember, clean oil = clean engine internals.
I change oil every 4k ish and is comes out a very light brown colour (NOT Black!).

LB, not convinced Zealious' HG is OK. He was recommended by garage to block up hoses to HBV, hence no cooling. He also has exhaust fumes in coolant....

I am not convinced they are exhaust fumes. If you have a completely blocked breather system, you will get some strange smells.

I would change this before comitting to head gasket.

Oh and blocking hoses to HBV will not stop cooling, they will stop the heater working.
The coolant still circulates through the radiator.

Actually, I was thinking more warped heads, as was run in effect with no cooling system...  ...thats why it ideally needs a pressure test...

See above amendment to comment about cooling.

I may be wrong (frequently am ;)), but I thought that OP had blocked off all hoses around HBV. Hence no coolant into coolant inlet bridge (pipe from HBV to coolant inlet), so no rad cooling?? Is that right?

Damn, good point!  :-[

Warped head would be unfortunate though.

There is a dye you can add to coolant, and that will show any leaks.
May be worth trying that and then whipping plenum and intake off to see if there is any evidence in the valley.

The oil cooler is still goosed though.
