As a sort of middle ground you could always have gone for a car fitted with a pre-selector box fitted.Similar/same system as they used to fit to buses-do they still do so?Had to ask that as I can't recall the last time I caught a bus!

Good find that 

One thing I noticed was the foot control for main beam, always a better idea those. Only ever had one car with that and found it very usable,  even on a manual

My first car, a MKIII Cortina, had a squeeezy bulb there for the screen wash (later changed), I found that I couldn't press that with my left foot without my right foot altering the throttle to some degree

I quite agree, all my early cars had that, and I found it worked well. I suppose if a gearchange and lights dip were simultaneously required, this may have been irritating, but IIRC it was never a problem. I would certainly prefer one on my autos than the column stick.

I've often wondered why we didn't get electronically controlled pre-selector gearboxes, rather than VW's horrendously complex two-gearboxes-in one-case DSG to achieve a similar result. Especially as the biggest justification for such things is that it makes for gear changes that happen in milliseconds.

Most city buses are auto - but theres rumours of semi autos coming back on the grounds of fuel economy...
