Some relatives came over today to inspect my work on my project car... of course they found a fault i knew nothing about!  

Whilst in the garage in the dark i had never switched on the lights, i fixed the fog light when it was outside and never checked it inside.

Well half the lights on the dash don't work, fuel gauge not lit up, entire speedo not lit up and only have of the rev range (0-3.5k) acually lit up

Fook i thought, if someone notices that they won't buy.... so i look in my trusty (some say micky mouse) tool box for implements to fix my problem:

Spanner: Nah no nuts
Knife: Humm possible but make too much damage
Hammer: That might work
Mallet: Again might work (put it to one side)

Ahh yes thats what i want... i get my fists out!  

I then go and and 'wack' the speedo cluster with the parm of my hand. - First 'wack' and the fuel gauge lights up!! Whoooo!

Second wack, nothing  

third wack, still nothing  

4th wack half of the speedo lights up  

5th wack, nothing again  

6th wack, nothing.

7th wack, nothing
 
8th wack nothing.

9th wack..... whooooo hoooo all the dash lights up to its full glory and it even fixed some dead pixels in the MID!!!!

Remeber folks never leave your fist out of your tool box

Might be worth taking a peek behind the console, cleaning up some contacts...

yeah.. although its not as easy it seams to rip open the console compared to my facelift.

Wish i had not stuffed the brakes, really want to take it out and find out if all is well, and the alternator won't flatten the battery. Plus i want to see if the EM light still comes on

Looking forward to knowing what to do.... since 500ml of DOT is only £3 retail price i think i will also change it on my facelift.

Had a quick inspection underneath mine today, now i know what the sensors look like i can see someone has cut them off and fused them on my facelift  

So after i know what to do, and practiced on the project car. I plan to change the pads, and do a system bleed on the facelift.

I had the same problem on my 99' omega, had to regularly smack the top of the dash to get the speedo to light up

Generally, brakes should be bled every two years...

As Jaime says would be worth getting the dash out to clean the contacts....as it must have been bad connections....otherwise when you do take it out @ night.....first bump you go over and the bulbs will more than likely go off again

The colours regually went odd on them, we had a class room full of them in a crappy IT room at my last job. I regually had to smack them with my fist to get the colours right again!

Or the proper fix was to sort out the dry joints on the board that sits on the neck of the tube....

Do NOT switch on ignition with dash out though, it well result in airbag light needing resetting (£45 at a dealer)

On second thoughts, do switch on ignition - I could make a fortune!

Trouble is, why would we want to fix 13 year old monitors! We did't so we hit them!  

We had about 70 or 80 of them spread across the site, if we broke enough meant we could have TFT's

Being a school we had class room 'huts' which were about 1/2 a bloody mile away from the office, luggin 14" & the newer 17" moniors over there was a right PITA.

Trouble with TFT's and the little darlings we had at school we had to get hard glass ones to stop them poking them.

Looked damn nice in Science though, we installed a set of 30 pc's with hard glass 17" TFT's in a science room. Looked good, wish i had that kind of IT when i was at school.
