General Discussion Area / Patio Doors
« on: 03 November 2018, 11:57:38 »
We are about to replace our 25 yr old south facing patio doors, and in an effort to reduce glare we have been recommended Pilkington sun-activ for the outer pane and 'k' glass for the inner pane. However in an old thread elsewhere I read that the k glass can look slightly opaque when the sun is at a certain angle. Can anyone shed any light (pun intended 8)) on this?
Research shows that Pilkington offer many types of specialist glass, so picking the right one to give some glare protection from the sun, with optimum thermal value is tricky. :-\

General Car Chat / Disco diesel

Friends daughter has a Disco diesel which has to have the additive (pigs urine?) topped up ocsnly. Apparently it is done free under 3 year warranty. Does it have to be done by JLR or is this a commonly avlbl additive?

Was watching this last night as they changed a broken rail. A gang arrived to do the urgently required work and did not have the correct sized spanner to undo the nuts holding the railkeeper in place!!!!!
Is it any wonder our rail network is in chaos. :-X

General Discussion Area / Musical memories

We all have those songs/numbers that have made an impact. One particular favourite of mine was the Four Tops, 'I'll be there'. I was working in the garage re-building a 1931 Ariel Square Four when I first heard it. Simon Dee, the DJ, (I know, you've never heard of him,) was so impressed, he played it twice in succession on the wireless radio. I was lucky enough to have lived through, and enjoyed, the '60's and Motown music, etc.
What was the record that had an impact on you, and why?

General Discussion Area / Any window fitting experts on OOF?
« on: 19 July 2018, 19:17:52 »

This frame is in a new window, just fitted this week, and is misaligned, such that the glazing bead cannot sit flush with the frame, in turn leaving gaps at each end of the bead, and it looks much worse in real life. This is a window fitted this week in a new aperture in our dining room. It immediately catches the eye when you look at the window.
I would like to reject it as unsuitable. Any experts on here?

...on my Mondeo 2.0L ecoboost, 3700 miles after its first service oil change (so the garage says ::)) looks like a diesel. They claim they used 5-20W full fat, presumably (or possibly) Castrol. If anyone with experience of this engine can confirm this is to be expected with this type of oil, I will be amazed, if not particularly pleased. In any case, prior to a 1000 mile trip, I've replaced the oil, and will be examining it closely.  :-\ :-\ :-\

Just picked up 20L 5w-30  (ford spec for the Mondy) from local VX stealer. £40 +VAT, not TC but mates rate. Don't know how that compares. :-\

PS Also, after KW's tip, picked up two taps to fit the 20L drums, very handy at a couple of quid each. :y

...that I'm a tightwad, but I thought I'd pass on something I discovered today. As you know I like to use cashback sites, and used Topcashback to look for new home and contents insurance, my renewal quote having gone up by 25% or so. However, not happy with the terms offered, I then went through MSE. The best quote I could find was an introductory offer by the company I was with, Tesco Bank, for much less than last year, but, for new customers only. >:(
I thought I'd phone them up and grumble anyway, just to make me feel better, however I was delighted to hear that I could cancel my existing policy on its expiry date, and take the quote as a new customer, which I promptly did, via Topcashback, paying a total of £64 after cashback, less than a third of my renewal quote with the same company! :) :) :) :y
