My non a/c 98 2.0 heater only just gets warm with the dial the way round to the red. The temp gauge reads between 92 - 95. Is this a common fault?

Has coolant had regular changes over the years ? Have you tried the usual heater matrix flush out with hose pipe. Could be sludged up. But dont use any aggressive cleaning agents .

I've only recently bought the car so no idea of previous history. The flushing sounds a good idea, I'll try that tomorrow. Thanks for the reply. :-)

The heater should produce HOT air within about a mile, which only happens if the matrix is clear and the thermostat is good. Flushing the matrix might improve it, but they silt up badly - when I replaced mine, 9 out of the 12 tubes were so packed with crap I couldn't poke some lockwire down them. I should have replaced the matrix ages ago; I put up with a barely functioning heater for seven years.
A new part is cheap(I paid about £16), but fitting it is a typical Omega job.

Guide on how to flush heater matrix in Maintenance Guide under "Trim, Cosmetics & Body " external section ;) probably a V6 shown but should be the same .
There is also a guide for removing the heater hoses from the matrix pipes that protrude into the engine bay . Tricky little buggers if you don't know the knack.
Once they are off just connect garden hose to one side (heat end of hose in hot water to ease pushing it onto matrix pipe) another short length of hose (6 feet or so) from the other matrix pipe aimed into a bucket to catch all the rusty crap that may emerge when the hose is turned on . . . simples ;)

I have been on the maimtainance sction on here, it is very professional I must say.

My First call would be to check the Thermostat and the Heater by Pass Valve are doing there Job, then go for the Matrix Flush reverse first then forward.
Only thing I would suggest is put some Flush agent in there first and run for a week or two and repeat and try and dislodge as much crap before you do the Flushing, I tend to use a couple of Dish Washer tablets mixed with a Double dose of Fernox (Domestic / Home Radiator cleaner), if its starts turning a Coffee / Rusty Brown colour all the better, then drain and repeat before the Flush.
