toyata pick brains time
« on: 15 October 2010, 13:54:18 »

my neighbour has a toyota carina E 1996 with 7A-FE 1800cc engine
start the car from cold its fine for 10 minutes then drops to three cylinders
checked compression all ok
checked spark all ok
there is however no pulse on number 2 injector
checked the codes and it came up with code 31
which is map sensor
would this cause this problem or should i look elsewhere

Injector signal may well be a red herring. If it detected a misfire on that cylinder it would have dropped the injector to stop contamination of the cat.

My guess would be some damp in the ignition system that starts to condense somewhere once it gets a little heat into the engine. Misfire starts, ECU disables injector so misfire persists.

The MAP error might well be a consequence of this although it's odd that you have no misfire codes.

Is the MAP sensor separate from the ECU? Can you check the pipework and wiring to it.

No experience al all with this engine, just thinking aloud. ;)

have fitted new plug, leads, distributer cap, rotor arm,
all 4 plugs spark when tested
compression test on cylinders is
1/ 160
2/ 158
3/ 162
4/ 158
when plug lead number 2 is pulled up slightly you can hear the arc going to the plug
the map sensor is on the bulkhead with a three pin plug and one vacum hose to inlet manifold
removing either the car tries to stall
have done the test according to Autodata
the readings i got did not comply with the book
book states test 1 e2-pim ignition on 3.6 v i got 1.5
test 2 e2-pim engine running 1.5 v i got 3.8v
pulling hair out now

Is that electrically or mechanically no pulse on No2? I'm guessing electrically given your other tests, but just to be sure.. :)

Don't suppose they got the pin numbers the wrong way round?

Does the signal change if you connect a length of hose and suck?
