Technically, its a case of swapping the entire headlight unit out, and some minor wiring mods.

Legally (and morally) is more demanding according to DfT, as you need 3 things for HIDs
Type approved lens for HIDs (if you buy a HID headlamp unit you're OK)
An automatic headlight cleaning system
A fully automatic levelling system, either on the headlight itself, or suspension

Just to play devil's advocate, new beetle doesn't have headlamp washers and has xenon's.

Oh but they do, I was at a training course at Thatcham and they had one there.

It had the levelling system but no washers.

And would you believe there was a rather nice Silver Omega saloon there with LPG that they have had for some time that they said they were going to scrap. I think they used to use it for training on LPG.

Not wishing to fuel the fire, but OPs car is a Sport which does at least have headlight washers...

I am considering this as an upgrade to my Sport, as the halogen lights are woeful compared to xenons, but it has to be done in a considered fashion. At the very least the manual level control on the halogen lights needs to be retrofitted to the xenon units and must be in working order. Headlight washers are relatively straightforward to fit, and again should ideally be fitted.

This way the retrofitted xenons will at least go someway towards satisfying the Mot requirements...

To do it properly involves fitting all the xenon wiring and ecu from a factory equipped car :y

It has to have an automatic cleaning system, not necessarily washers. There are a few ways to achieve that.

The grey area is there is no UK legislation, other than HIDs are not technically legal.  However, the UK has to follow the euro stance on it, which is what DfT publish as the requirements.

Gas Discharge (Bi-Xenon) dipped and main beam headlights with LED daytime running lights, rear tail lights and rear number plate lights.
But no headlamp washers, and yes it was a UK spec car.

They make Omega headlamps look cheap in comparison!!

I wonder if it was built for the European market?  :-\

Its the euro laws that suggest the requirements - UK has no law for HIDs, technically they remain not legal (but EU law takes priority)

The Beetle and Audi A1 apparently have 25W HID lamps with a less than 2000lumen rating, thus apparently excluding them from requiring washers or self levelling.

Just wondering if the Beetle having 'no headlamp washer' - I'm not sure, but could they just not be visible? VAG cars tend to have these lovely flush-fitting types, which you can't really tell they're there until they pop out briefly for use. Unlike Omega ones which literally 'stand out'

Beetle ones as per...

Not calling Magwheels wrong/liar etc.. just saying it's pretty hard to spot them on a VAG car, because the execution is so neat.
