Another MOT pass on the CDX
« on: 31 August 2019, 13:38:33 »

Took the Y reg. CDX estate for its annual check up this morning.  Same garage as usual but a new tester .Delighted when he commented that "This car is amazing for its age". He also commented that even the emissions test was really good & that he could tell that it has been well  looked after  ::) :-[.  So a pass with no advisories this time  . . .so happy days & good for another year .  Looking like the best £300 I've ever spent 3 years ago when I got it ;D ;D ;D

But does make  you wonder about the advisory thing  . .. when some testers just HAVE to put something on for the bloody hell of it  . . .others are quite happy to leave none. ::) ::) ::)

Congratulations on the pass  :)

I think some do it to get work, some do it to cover themselves with general statements like "rusty suspension components"
corrosion has a 3 month liability IIRC BUT to asses corrosion, your only allowed to use fingers and thumbs and official corrosion assessment tool  the size of a toffee hammer to tap (not poke the sharp end through with force  ::))

assuming you get £150 scrap when you finish using the Omega , that's £50 a year "depreciation" ,£1 a week  ;D

+1 :y :y :y

Yes, with my last MOT at a specialist brake, tyre, and exhaust centre that I have used for years, there suddenly appeared two advisories, each one about "dirty and slightly corroded" front brake pipes.  This was after under 4,000 miles of driving over the previous year, and my local Vx dealer doing the MOT then, and the previous two, without anything being "advised".

As some will remember, I posted about getting the car high on ramps after the MOT and cleaning the pipes from front to back, protecting with Supertrol.  During that process I found no signs of any rust, just some light dirt!  I almost went back to the MOT tester, or another one I have know for years, and raising it with them, but can't be bothered to do so as it may stir up trouble for future MOT's!! ::) ::)

It does make you wonder though..................but these garages know my car and me well, working on it from time to time........so...??! ??? ??? ;)

I think if you use the same MOT place every year they almost expect the car to be near on perfect as why would you keep it otherwise.

I have used the same family run business for nearly 30 years and the son of the owner now always insists on doing my MOT test as he has commented most years that he finds it a pleasure testing a car that is looked after not the normal 4/5 year old wreck that isnt maintained and fails on stupid things.

But that is the thing with me, both MOT garages know my car and me very well, doing jobs on it when I cannot. They both have MOT'd my latest Omega for 6 years now, as they did with the previous ones, plus a Toyota, for the previous 12 years.  Just funny how these "advisors" suddenly appear, especially when they are really minor/incorrect ::) ::) ;)

Those advisories are a year apart, so they didn't suddenly appear!

Most of the MOT test is a basic visual inspection, so some judgement is required - and there are rules on that the tester has to be aware of. The test is actually valid at the time it is carried out, but the next one is a year away. So, items that the tester has concerns about, whether that's because he can't dismantle covers or other parts to inspect thoroughly or that might be problematic before the next test, are flagged as advisories. This is the real function of having the test, and is nothing to complain about - especially when many car owners have essential repairs made only because of an MOT fail. Now imagine if your car had a brakepipe fail 4 months after the test, you'd be screaming blue murder that it should have been spotted at the test and that they're incompetent.

I use the same business as Amba(and my mother has been using them for over fifty years), and have never had any car fail on anything I could argue about. I have had some unexpected failures though, like the Omega that I'd just driven home from work with loose strut to hub bolts :o . Their various testers over the years have all commented that they know any repairs I put in will be done properly!

Yes, I agree with that,  :y :y
But after mileage of under 4K pipes are just dirty - there was no "rust" -, and that is deemed an advisory?  I have in my time had many advisories that I could see the progression with and agreed was an increasing problem, which I have always dealt with.  But this was different. ;)

However I recognise gone are the days when the MOT tester just said to you "that should be looked at before next time", as for all the right reasons it must now all be officially recorded 8) 8) ;)
