Departure of an old friend
« on: 03 July 2019, 15:06:07 »

I have owned this Omega for over 13 years, a record for me, but now it has to go, witnessed by son and grandson. Charles Trent gave me £184 for it, and the friendly driver let my grandson look into his cab.

And a much better price than I used to get from my local scrap merchant. Thanks for the tip.

I wonder. The market for Omega parts must be shrinking fast.

Only bits worth good money is downpipes, £100, gearbox £150, flywheel and pedal box£75, rear diff if lsd £200.  There you go Terry, Not as if you couldn't have removed those bits and stored them to sell, would have sold in about a week.

Yes, rust. Last 3 MOTs more and more rust has been found, this year it passed MOT but I found the right hand rear shock aborber turret nearly rusted through.

Sure, 13 years is quite long time, I bought mine in 2004 so owned it 15 years. With help of oof easy to keep it moving but as said corrosion becomes more and more the case. Perhaps if I had done some corrosion protection early enough situation could be better today. Looking now for e.g. E-series Mercedes as I am towing a caravan.

I used to buy ex-police Senators at auction, and scrapped them when the clutches failed. I bought ex-police Omega OE03 at auction too, and was alarmed to read that it was on its 5th clutch at 119,000 miles. That clutch failed after 10000 more miles, but JamesV6CDX and OOF taught me how to change clutches, and the car lasted another ten years. Eventually something was bound to finish it off, and it turned out to be corrosion.

I forgot your cars have proper manual gear boxes Terry and all 3 pedals (as God intended  :D )
many people would have given you £184 for the transmission setup alone  :(

Having just done 150 miles in motorway stop start traffic, I can only think that anyone who wants to drive a manual car must be deranged. ::)

I rarely get the chance to drive much more than 20 miles in one hit these days, which is a pity. I like a nice long drive in a comfy car, but no particular reason to do it.  :(
Used to often drive the Chevette HS to Stranrear to catch the ferry, and even though I was in my early twenties I always felt like I had been hit with a shovel when I got there. It would bloody kill me to attempt that now.  ;D

That's where the Trolley falls down. My commute is 26 miles/40 minutes. The Trolley becomes uncomfortable after about 30 minutes :'(

The 190 isn't bad on my 17 mile / 30 minute commute, but the Omega is a joy to drive, on the rare occasion I take it to work.

It always amazes me that some manufacturers manage to make car seats so uncomfortable on long journeys .. it's almost like the designers never sit in them ;D

Fortunately I find her Mini comfortable, my BMW very comfy and the Range Rover is like sitting in an arm chair ;D having done the commute (~80 miles and ~2.5hrs) in all three recently, the Mini (automatic) is probably the 'easiest' place to do it because you can hurl it into roundabouts (A43 past Silverstone) with gay abandon, BMW most comfortable (despite being a manual gearbox, that doesn't even factor into it - it's more that you know it weighs 1.8tonnes when you're trying to throw it into a roundabout!) and the Range Rover the least involving but effortless..

This is actually the main reason I prefer larger cars ;)

I have owned this Omega for over 13 years, a record for me, but now it has to go, witnessed by son and grandson. Charles Trent gave me £184 for it, and the friendly driver let my grandson look into his cab.

Did you have to haggle for £184? They quoted me £122 today for my estate 😞

Trent offered me £184, the Liverpool lot offered me £134. My local scrappy pays me about £80.

Can they learn whether manual or auto from the registration number? Log book said 2003 3.2 petrol police special, that could be either.

It doesn't. ;)

Special refers to the trim level, identifying the car as a non retail, special order model. Options included gearbox choice, diff choice, alternator/battery choice etc...

I logged into the Charles Trent web site, inserted reg. no. and post code, and up came the offer of £184. A women rang later with enquiries about when would be convenient to collect,  payment method, etc.

Scrap is a reasonably volatile commodity, especially mixed scrap.

My mate whom I helped kill a 206 got £40 for the rolling shell from a chap on face ache. ;)
