Modern car specs and gadgets
« on: 16 September 2017, 22:08:08 »

Still in the fairly depressing mode of looking for a second car.

Today went and looked at a 2013 ford  focus estate 2.0 diesel 163 cv powershift. The model was the titanium version. Now i have always liked gadgets and a bit of luxury hence the Elite omegas in the past. What i did find a bit shocking is the salesman telling me it had this and that which were all standard on the Elite. Things like dipping interior mirror, folding manually wing mirrors. Sport mode, cruise control. No xenon lights but daylight leds. No memory drivers seat/mirror/wing mirrors. It did have bluetooth and a 12volt boot outlet. Computer on board yes, sat nav no. Automatic headlights in case you didnt spot it was lighting up time?  No sun roof. All this comparing a car fifteen years older.....

Reflecting on the demo of the golf estate recently where the owner set park assist and it kerbed the wheels twice in the successfull? attempt., maybe gadgets aren't  that important. Anyone find their car users like parking sensors? ( see how diplomatic I was there!)  what gadgets/features do you like?

My only must haves are heated seats, cruise control and a good stereo.

SWMBO likes park assist very much, we've never had the issue you had with the golf  :-\

My Mondeo has front and rear parking sensors.  I've never been beeped at so much!!  :o  ;D

Oh and it's also the first car I had with electric folding mirrors, which is handy to be able to tuck them in at the press of a button.  :y

Trouble with parking sensors front & back is that you become deaf to them continually beeping at you ..... I've even had a tree leap out  behind me ...... & I did hit it   ::)
My mirrors fold when I lock it  ;)

I like to have as many gadgets as possible, but I rarely use most of them. Its nice to know that I can if I want to though.
I know, I'm a weirdo.  ::) ;D

Today My wife put a deposit on a 61 reg Tekna Juke.  Gadgets galore. Inc Reversing camera.
Heated leather seats but no spare wheel.
I'm looking at 16 inch Duster steel wheels as I have a random 16 inch tyre in the garage. Juke has 17 inch wheels but I thought a 16 inch spare would be erm....fine ?

Not that I'll be in a position to buy such new stuff, but I'm not one for gadgets in cars as most of them I don't really want or need. What gets me on some cars[newish Mercedes and the latest Fiesta for example]are these screen things on the dash.I dare say they  do a whole host of "important" stuff that's a must have these days, but they're just stuck there like they forgot to put it in until the last moment and not integrated into the dash at all.

Varche, you need to remember that your old Omega was a top end motor, whereas the Focus is a small family car. A top end Focus from the Omega era had no goodies at all really.

As to Focus' park assist, one of the guys spec'd that on his new Focus a couple of years back, but never uses it, because unless you can park the QE2 in the space, it says its too small ;D

Features I like on my current motor are cooled seats, keyless entry, blind spot monitoring, self dipping mirrors all round, rear electric blind, parking sensors all round with rear camera (X351 has dreadful rear visibility), and the sound system. I suspect as the cold weather starts, I'll soon be saying that heated steering wheels is a must have as well ;D, but not used it yet other than to check it works. Gimmicks I could live without are all the touchless glovebox and interior lights.  I'll hold judgement on folding mirrors, as not convinced of their use.

The feature I *REALLY* miss from Omegas that is absent is the interior mirror is not on the memory system :(

What if you don't want to fold the mirrors when you lock it though:-\

On mine, you go in to the settings and un-tick the 'Fold mirrors when locking' option. You can still manually do it on the door button or the fob.  :y

I think mine is a setting needing dealer diags equipment, which is a bit daft IMHO. Esp as my passenger one is getting lazy unfolding, so I'd probably be inclined not to fold when locking ;D. And I bet a replacement mirror is the wrong side of £2k - I know the glass is well over £300 :o

That's what I was thinking, that with all that folding and unfolding they'd get tired.  :-\

Poor things!  ;D

The good, the bad and the ugly.

18 way memory seats (except for driving mirror) :y
TPMS.....Total crap. Random messages. Pointless. Annoying. >:(
Blind spot monitor.........serves a purpose.  :y
825 W sound system with 10CD onto hard drive. :y
Heated seats..... :y
Cooled seats......don't cool. :( :(
Keyless entry. Is there a point to this other than forgetting where the key is. :( :(
Reversing camera. Nice gimmick but... :(
Heated front screen. :y
Sat Nav. Sourced from Tandy in 1972. :(
Electric sunroof....I actually like it on this car because it is quiet. :y
Folding mirrors. Good idea, also lets you know that the car is locked. :y
