Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Whats this for ?
« on: 22 February 2012, 18:44:46 »
Just been out and checked on my 1998 2.5 Elite and yes I have a traction control (TC) button in that position. :)

I recall when looking at Omega's to buy many years ago that some had a large TC button (and a couple of blanking plates) to the left of the radio.

I had a little cubby hole in that position and later added a sat nav screen.

I also remember that some early elites had rear door glass demisters built into the rear doors. The switch may have been in that position. This option was later deleted. Certainly not on my 98 model.

Hope this helps.

General Car Chat / Re: New Tradeclub book
« on: 18 February 2012, 14:06:12 »
I got one of those letters too. Returned it and within a week got my 2012 Trade Club "Trade Book" on CD.

Still not got a new club card yet. Mine had expired in January. My dealer says it doesn't matter as long as my details are on the computer data base?

It also says you can request a printed version of the Trade Book via the Trade Club website but I can't find the link.

Anyone else managed this?

You can say that again. Nearly put my back out looking for the little devil. :(

Like most things, once you know where it is then it's easy in the future. :y

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Tow bar electrics
« on: 16 February 2012, 12:59:49 »
Just refurbished the towbar and electrics over the past few weeks on my mini-facelft Omega.

Finally found the socket base for the brake light failure sensor/relay!!!

I bought the sensor over 13 years ago (part no 90463123) but never got round to fitting it. My local Vauxhall dealer/parts dept/service dept were less than useful about where it should go and there was no useful forums to help out at that time.

Like you I had just wired the towbar brake lights into adjacent brake light and that worked ok.

Also decided to fit a 4 pin Flasher relay (part no 90506697, Vauxhall's wanted £39.86 but got a copy off ebay at £9.00) and now have towbar warning lamp on the instrument cluster instead of that annoying buzzer.

Everything works so well pleased. Only took 13 years!!!

Omega General Help / Re: Dent removal?
« on: 17 November 2011, 17:20:20 »
Never tried dent removal myself but I did get a professional to sort out various dings in one of my Omega's when I bought it.

Can say they earn their money. It took a few hours and the result was brilliant.  :y

They are armed with an amazing amount of specialist tools which can get behind panels and the way they manipulate them is a wonder to behold. :D

Omega General Help / Re: Gearbox holes
« on: 13 November 2011, 16:12:52 »
I rememember when I bought my first Omega back in 1999 I found those two holes were not covered which did look strange.

I made a few enquiries at my local Vauxhall parts department and they confirmed that there should be two rubber grommits and in those days you could get replacements. Probably not available now?  :(

Omega General Help / Air Con Condesor - Starting to fall apart
« on: 08 November 2011, 17:42:50 »
I removed the underbody tray on my V6 Omega to have a shuffty underneath prior to it's annual MOT and found large pieces of aluminium cooling fins.  :(

Assumed they were from the radiator but on closer examination I found that they were from the lower section of the air con condensor (on the inside next to the radiator).

The air con stills works ok and the condensor has no obvious leaks but it is the original (1998 model) and I guess is one it's way out.

I also have another Omega (1997 model) so I checked it's condensor. Guess what? Exactly the same type of damage! :-\

So well worth checking. I found it easier to remove the centre plastic cover at the front of the engine bay and look down between the radiator and condesnor.

Looks like it's going to get expensive  >:(

With all this talk of Harry Bucklands and Omegas I just had to go and have a rummage today (Monday) in the rain. ;)

Could not find the MV6 that an earlier contrbutor said was in but there are plenty of Omega's. I think there was 5 pre-facelift saloons (diesel, V6 and 4 pot), 2 pre-facelift estates and a facelift estate). All are well picked over.

Wonderfull.  :y

I think the example shown on the thread is the worst anyone on the Jag forum had seen but it is someting a prospective buyer should have a good look at before buying.

As I said earlier mine is a 1999 model and when I examined the sills with the plastic sill covers off the rust was superficial.

The consensus on the forum also suggest that models from 2002 had "better" rustproofing (something about a hot zinc bath on the production line).

Hope this helps.

Note, I have run my S type  for years and the running costs are pretty similar to my Omega's but you have to shop around for the best deals.

Good luck  :y

I think this is the link to one of the Jaguar Forums showing the sill damage on a S Type.

Re the sills.

There have been a number of Jaguar Forum members who have reported rust holes in the sills (and some amazing pictures to show the problem). The problem is usually hidden behind the sill covers so the owner have no indication of the problem untill it is too late.  >:(

I also run a 1997 Rover 400 and a 1997 Honda Civic which also had major sill rot which was also hidden by plastic sill covers.

I am now a very good welder. :y

I now remove any sill covers off my cars every year, clean out all the rubbish that collects behind them and give the area a spray with a rustproofer like Waxoyl.

Omega General Help / Re: rear wheel adjustors unsieze
« on: 05 November 2011, 20:44:34 »
They can be a pig to get working. I have recently got all my adjusters (front and rear) working but I managed to break a vice doing it.  :(

I tried the heat method (a plumbers propane torch) which worked fine on the fronts but made no impact on the rears. I guess you need more heat (acetylene torch?).

In the end I used my sandblast cabinet to get rid of all the rust then a 3ft stilson wrench in a new heavy duty vice. Bingo.

Now thooughly greased up using copper grease.

Good luck.  :y
