Looks like an (Austin) Rover Montego. :o

I own two 2.5 V6 Omega Elite's and both get regular use.:D

Both are pre-face lift. One is a R registration (1997) and the other is a T registration (1999). Apart from the usual Elite specification both unusually came with the optional "Philips" sat nav system. They were good for their day but obviously pretty much obsolete. (but still work)

I have had the T reg  from new in 1999 (a company car) and then bought it from the company three years later.

The second one was bought with  low miles and full VX service history in 2000.

I now do all my own servicing and I am lucky I can access the VX Trade Club and Halfords Trade Card schemes which dramatically keeps the running costs down.

I regularly log into this forum and enjoy the various threads and regularly refer to the excellent maintenance guides. However, I must admit I don't contribute much in the way of chat etc. It's just not the sort of thing I get involved in or have time for.

Keep up the good work. Carfix

Omega General Help / Re: door central locking
« on: 26 February 2017, 16:12:41 »
It's a bit tricky but definitely doable. I have just replaced a door central locking solenoid (or motor) on my car this weekend.

You first need to take off the interior "door card" and this involves removing various screws (some hidden by trim pieces).

Then carefully peel the plastic sheet (membrane) away from the door.

There are three torx bolts at the side of the door frame that holds the complete lock mechanism in place. Undo these.

You will need to unclip one of metal rods which is attached to the door lock at one end and the other goes to the interior handle. Look for a blue plastic clip. This needs to swing out of the way before the rod is released from the door lock. A long thin screwdriver will help here.

The door lock can then be manoeuvred upwards enough to unclip the electrical connector.

The lock can then be removed from the door.

The central locking solenoid or motor is held onto the door lock by two screws.

Weather much better today (Saturday) so I decided to fit my "repaired" central locking solenoid.

It now works as it should so it is well worth spending a few pounds replacing those pesky micro-switches. :y

Replaced the two micro switches in one of my front door, central locking solenoid using the excellent write up by Kevin Wood in the "Maintenance Guides"

Will fit it tomorrow to see if that has cured it's random operation?

Fitted a towbar and greased the drive belt idler pulley on my 2.5 V6 Omega Elite.

Idler had started to make a noise and on inspection there was little evidence of any grease once the bearing dust shields were removed.

And yet another job I have put off for years!!

Swapped my brown stained coolant reservoir (the original from 1999) for a "good as new" replacement from my local scrapyard.

Took me 10 mins to do and I can now see the coolant level again :y

Just a lazy central locking solenoid to sort out for another day (raining now).

And...........

Finally replaced the bonnet struts on my 2.5 Elite after the bonnet nearly took my head off. :o

With the new ones fitted (a 10 minute job) the bonnet now behaves itself and securely locks itself in the upright position.

Should have done this years ago.  :-[

Finally replaced the badly worn handbrake gaiters on both my PFL Omega's.

Got hold of two decent gaiters from face lift cars. Thought it might just be a straight swap but the shape and fitting lugs of the plastic frame that the black vinyl is stapled too is different.  >:(

Had to unpicked the staples to release the black vinyl (gaiter) then re-stapled the vinyl onto the original frame.

Another long standing job done :y

Omega General Help / Re: Won't start, possibly starter motor

I also have a good local independent motor factors but I agree that the internet has made sourcing parts much easier.

My main focus is now running and rebuilding two MG Maestro's. The parts availability is not that good now but ebay has been a invaluable.

Further to my previous post.

My second Omega (1998 2.5 Elite) died with a faulty starter motor this week. Turn the ignition on and "click", further attempts and still no go. (Battery is fully charged using a constant trickle charge using a CTEK charger/conditioner).

Over the last two weeks it had been getting progressively harder to start with a few "clicks" and non starts but it would eventually fire up. Then I had a complete non start no matter how many times the ignition switch was turned (again battery charge is good).

Luckily this time this happened on my drive but two failed starter motors within two weeks must be some sort of record?

However, with the knowledge of replacing a starter still fresh in my mind this one was done within a couple of hours. Result :y

And just in case, I did check the starter motor off the car and it was defective (as was the first one I took off my other Omega).

Omega General Help / Re: Drivers door catch
« on: 03 February 2017, 23:17:55 »
This has also happened to me a year or so ago. Very frightening.  :o

I thought it was probably a one off event and perhaps I had not shut the door properly but it kept happening again.

My instinct was to take the door card off and examine and lubricate the internal and external parts of the lock mechanism but this did not work.

In the end I bought a new lock mechanism from my local dealer and once fitted it has not happened since.

I did notice that once the old lock was off the car that a large section of plastic around the actual catch had snapped off.

Yep, I have also kept the old starter too with a view to refurbishing the solenoid.

Bet that never happens and the starter migrates to the back of the garage to join all the other unfinished "projects"  :y

I am now looking at changing the starter on my other Omega (it's just started to do the "click" thing). I really can't pluck up the courage to work under a car again until the weather gets better.

Just had the same problem on my 1999 2.5 CDX.

Over the past few months the starter would randomly not start at the first turn of the key. You could hear a loud click so I guessed the solenoid was playing up but it would fire up on the second or third turn of the key so it never left me stranded. So I decided to ignore it. :D The car battery is brand new and fully charged (regularly trickled charged using my CTEK battery charger/conditioner).

However, once the cold weather arrived this started to get worse untill a complete failure last week. No amount of key action would get it to fire. I tried the time honoured trick of hitting the solenoid/starter.....nothing. Luckily the car was stranded outside my house.

So, I replaced the starter and the engine now fires up as normal. Result. I guess 19 years service from the original starter is not bad :y

Replacing the starter was a bit of a pain (a good article in the maintenance section helps) as I am not as young as I used to be.

I have managed to loose one of the engine mount nuts into the sub-frame!!!! Anyone got any spares? Engine mount lower nut.

The big problem was getting the car off the street and onto my drive to do the work. It's a big car to tow and with no power steering. The wife was not happy!

Now my other Omega (1998, 2.5 Elite) is starting to play up with the exact problem. >:(
