Bridge collapse
« on: 16 March 2018, 19:30:50 »

The Americans were installing a pedestrian bridge over a roadway[can't recall where they said it was]from the pictures it looked like they'd got the over road bit in place but not the ramps/steps up to it.This bridge was allegedly designed to last 100+yrs and to withstand earthquakes and all sorts of other natural phenomena and the day after they'd installed it it collapsed onto the road beneath. Now I'd have found that hilarious if not for the fact that it crushed several vehicles when it did so and the last I heard was 8 fatalities from those vehicles-the death toll may have risen since then.

Design of the bridge at fault?

Construction of bridge (6 hours) at fault?

Both of the above?

I would not like to be the person who has to come up with an explanation of what went wrong.

No, I wouldn't like to be the one trying to talk my way out of that either.

In the UK they would have shut the road and done that stress testing and cable tightening at night, so to minimise impact.

Why on earth were they doing all that with live traffic flowing.  :-\

Apparently, they were using thr 'accelerated construction' method. Not as quick as the 'accelerated deconstruction' method.
