I washed my down jacket at home following the instructions on the label but this still left it very wet. After 12 hours, water was still dripping off it. So I took it to the laundrette to use the tumble dryer and now it smells like a tramp had done wee wee on it.  :(

Another 12 hours later, the smell is still there! I'd rather not wash it again because it still hasn't fully dried from the first wash and the down is still clumped together in places. This is also not something I can still in a 90 degree wash otherwise I would have done  ???

Omega General Help / urgent help required
« on: 30 December 2013, 14:29:45 »
I am in the middle of removing the alternator however the two bolts holding it in place do not appear to be coming out but just spinning in their place. Are they really long bolts or could something be broken?

One looks like its a 17mm nut on a bit of stud

Not going well

Omega General Help / Car died and all sorts
« on: 23 December 2013, 20:43:41 »
Haven't driven my car 'properly' for a while which may be a contributing factor...first I noticed the ABS and TC light stays on for 3-5 seconds after starting which its never done before so i thought maybe ABS ECU is starting to go.

Then the car would not start after picking up passengers, wouldn't even turn over. Pedal trick revealed 0560 twice which indicated a voltage problem and managed to get it going with a jump start. Bought new GM battery in July 2011.

On the drive home, the car wanted to cut out when the fans were on so turned it off. Then the battery light flashed every 20-30 seconds and when stationary the ABS & TC lights come on and go out when on the move (speedo and tacho work). Even the air bag light joined in and started flashing! Reversing sensor is not working and the central locking sounds limp but just managed to lock the car.

So what is going on?

Omega General Help / noisy backrests
« on: 21 September 2013, 10:15:36 »
There is an annoying noise from the rear seat backrests. Not a squeak or leather creak. It sounds hollow and only occurs when seat is in use. If I gently press the backrests with my hand I can hear it. But when I fold the seats and press against the backrest, no noise so its not the seat itself.

I think its caused by a bit of play on the latch/locking mechanism when the backrest in in place.. But how to solve this?

Is it possible to block certain devices such as smartphones/tablets etc from accessing the web wirelessly? At the moment I have the laptop, a few mobiles, and the sons tablet connected. I want to limit the time the tablet is connected and block it when needed from connecting. How can I do this without changing the password all the time?

General Discussion Area / Best (or good) anti-virus software
« on: 10 August 2013, 14:41:18 »
I'm currently using avast (free) and Malwarebytes (free) and found a few viruses and malware but some files were not scanned according to the computer because they were password protect but to my knowledge that isnt the case. Why could this be?

Anyway, I do online banking so I don't mind paying for something good, but would like something that would scan for viruses and malware. Any recommendations?

Omega General Help / Misfire codes - but no misfire present
« on: 03 August 2013, 18:15:53 »
After filling up with fuel today the engine management light came on. Car was pulling as normal, no signs of misfire/power loss so I thought the 0430 and 0420 returned. Car felt a bit, well different on start up but not rough before heading to the pumps

But it turned out to be

0300
0301
0306

Cam cover gaskets and spark plugs were changed were changed last year. GM fitted.

General Car Chat / chrisgixer

Just wanted to say a massive thanks to Chris for his advice recently, especially today. Think he mentioned he was on holiday so taking the time to reply to my queries was very kind of him. Didn't get off to a great start and had a few problems so only got one side fitted but hopefully tomorrow should go smoother.

Glad you're back

Omega General Help / Fitting new shocks, a few questions
« on: 18 July 2013, 22:40:35 »

Received my SL shocks from Andy today.

A few questions, are both shocks identical or left side different to right? I only took one out and had a wee look but made a bit of a mess with the shredded paper.

Do I need to reuse any bits from the the old setup? I know the bottom nut is to be reused and the two metal washers on the top. Anything else?

Looking at the How To, its recommends jacking the old shock to compress it. This is while the lower bolt is still connected. Would this not damage something if compressed too much?

Re, compressing new shocks before fitting. Chris recommended following the "test/raise SL suspension" to extend and compress a few times but after having a look at the thread in the maintenance section, I couldn't make head of tails out of it. Couldn't make out where the "rose joint" was or the "right angle arm"  :-[

Any help/pointers appreciated

Omega General Help / Broken suspension!
« on: 14 July 2013, 11:51:24 »
Car failed its MOT yesterday on leaking rear offside shock. The nearside was an advisory and wasn't as bad. Brought the back home all fine, took the car for a wash. On the way back, came to a roundabout which I took at a slightly higher speed and TC light flickered which I thought was due to the tyres still being wet from the wash.

A mile down the road, the car behaved very odd. Nearside bouncing all over the place and not absorbing any bumps. Car looks a little lower on that side now. I'll jack it up when it gets a little cooler, any tips on what to look for?

General Car Chat / Blimey!
« on: 01 June 2013, 18:47:47 »
Is it me or does the Omega run much better on V-Power nitro+ than standard fuel. I didn't think I'd notice, only used it to try and clear the pre cat codes (which it did).

Its much smoother and responsive. More eager to go when you press the loud pedal.

General Car Chat / How much is my car worth?
« on: 30 May 2013, 22:05:09 »
I think I might get rid of the old boy when the insurance runs out in August, due to a new member in our family. I don't want to do this, especially as I have spared no expense in looking after him.

So, its a March 2001 on a Y plate, 51k, star silver, grey leather interior. Main dealer service history and serviced by myself, and many OOFers. I don't want to write a full advert but briefly, at time of sale it will have 12 month MOT, 9 months tax. Cambelt and GM waterpump last August. New wishbones, poly rear donuts and Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric 2 (not cheap!) + WIM. Drives beautifully.  :-[  Everything works.

Putting it in writing makes me not want to sell it  :'(

General Discussion Area / Unlocking a HTC phone
« on: 15 May 2013, 20:12:57 »
My contract with O2 expires tomorrow and I have a new sim arriving from T-Mobile. I know you get nothing free in this world, and if something appears free - there is usually a catch. I've tried  ;D

So can someone recommend somewhere to unlock my Desire S (as cheap as possible, obviously)

Thanks

My offside side light bulb has blown/stopped working and so has the left hand side of the instrument panel both at the same time. The temp gauge and part of the tachometer is now in darkness. I hope they are linked because I dont fancy taking the dash out!
