General Car Chat / zipcar and the like
« on: 08 May 2013, 10:19:16 »
Looks like my meeega will be for sale by the end of the year due to my extended family. I am currently using my car only during the weekends so wondering if renting will be better for me than buying.  Any other alternatives?

Omega General Help / sheared oil sump pan bolt
« on: 06 May 2013, 16:19:53 »
Not the sump plug, but one of the bolts that hold the pan.

I refitted the oil sump pan yesterday after it was weeping through the bolts. This time I left it overnight for the silicone to cure. I tried to torque the bolts but my wrench wouldn't click at the desired setting so they were slightly overtightened. In my quest for perfection, today I slackened off the bolts and re torqued them but ended up shearing one.  :(

I don't think its leaking (but I didn't check) shall I leave or or try to drill it out and replace the nut with the pan in situ?

General Car Chat / Torque wrench question
« on: 05 May 2013, 23:38:19 »
I have this torque wrench http://www.toolstop.co.uk/sealey-stw1012-torque-wrench-micrometer-style-3-8sq-drive-2-24nm-1.47-17.70lb.ft-p15807

Today I was tightening M8 nuts to 20nm and the first tightened ok. The rest wouldn't click when set torque was reached so were overtightened. But when I tightened them to 15nm or less, it worked fine. Any reason why this would be?

These have have just come on, a month apart. Light disappears when car is started. Would leaving it have an effect on fuel consumption?

General Car Chat / Best time to check tyre pressure
« on: 14 April 2013, 12:47:09 »
Yesterday, on a cool, wet day I set the tyre pressures to 32psi all round. Today, (warm sunny day) I went to recheck the pressure and they were between 33 and 33.5psi so I set to 32psi again. This was using a dedicated tyre pressure gauge.

So when is the ideal time to set tyre pressures?

101

Bought 4 x Goodyear Eagle F1's two months ago. Was checking pressures today and this one dropped to 23.5psi.

Please someone tell me this can be repaired! I don't want to spend £125 on another tyre, not to mention possible running issues with new tyre having more tread than the others !  :(

General Car Chat / Abandoned omega
« on: 25 March 2013, 09:57:12 »
There is an abandoned PFL 3.0 MV6 that has been left to rot in an underground car park. The guys here asked me if I wanted any bits from it after seeing my Omega.

It has 3xMV6 alloys which I'll have as well as the two cats. Anything else of value/worth taking? How difficult are to cats to remove at the engine end? Any specific tools required?

Thanks

Omega General Help / oil sump gasket for 3.2
« on: 09 March 2013, 21:00:38 »
Is the one available for the 3.2? I know VX use grey sealant ans this is what I used when I replaced the oil pan. Over a month ago, chrisgixer commented how clean the sump was when he did wishbones so it wasn't leaking from day one

Today I had the car on ramps and noticed a slight oil drip around the plug and some oil on the pan bolts. Don't want to use sealant again tbh, would prefer to use gasket this time.

General Car Chat / Volvo XC90 as an Omega replacement?
« on: 06 March 2013, 20:20:05 »
Are these permanent 4 wheel drive? Internet says no

What are they like to live with, any major issues with them? I'm guessing big bills when they go wrong?

Anyone mechs here able to DIY these?

Thanks
