P0340 Cam sensor code after belt change
« on: 25 September 2019, 14:52:11 »

I'm depressed at the moment.  :-\ :'(

Had everything back together and firing it up and it ran really bad, not on all cylinders. Engine turn over and no mechanical sounds and sounds Ok until it fires upg, just running bad.

Got code P0340 and a P0300 (Misfiring) which it does.

The cam belt was properly aligned and it turned over OK when I checked the belt timing and it looked perfectly OK.

The cam sensor connector is connected.

What could be wrong? It ran perfectly fine before I started this job.

I'm a bit tired now after this and a few other things I've done to it the last days.

One thing during the belt change was that I had to remove the locks to get it on the belt correctly. It was off a bit. I held the cam with a ratchet wrench which was stupid. So it went away. I did turn it back to its position but could it really turn a complete 360° wrong. I mean it did stop and I could only turn it back to its proper position. Valves was hitting and it stop there. During this the crank was in position. It was cam 1 and 2 I had to do this on.

If it got completely wrong it wouldn't turn over, right?

Are you sure you have aligned the right cam markings for each cam? As far as I remember each sprite to has two and it is vital to align the correct one given your cams slipped when the locks were removed?  I’d need to look up which mark on which cam to be sure what’s right but someone else here may know

Yes I saw that. I have aligned them to the mark that is close to the number.

The code says: P0340 Camshaft position Sensor A Circuit Bank 1 or Single Sensor

Cam sensor wire pinched by the cover?

Also possible to swap it with the knock sensor plug as they are adjacent on the loom

Those are on the left side of the engine, right? I haven't touched them. The code says bank 1 so that is on the right side. There are two cam sensors on the V6?. If so I might have pinched the cable when I mounted the utility belt tensioner. The cable was a little tight when I was connecting it to the harness.

Only one cam sensor, sits on the front of the 246 head, and works off cam 4 iirc :-\

OK.

If you look at this image and on the 4th cam. This is how it was before I took it apart.
The two marks on the  4th cam seems to use the right mark and on cam 3 it uses the left mark. I think i set cam 4 to the left mark when I set them up after they broke loose.  If so then it must explain what is wrong here.

Back at it then...

Use the locking kit NOT the marks :o

Those back plate marks exist purely to give something to aim at on the production line, nothing more. Even then the timing is done with a locking kit.

Agreed use the locking kit but you’ve got to know which mark you are lining up

To the op bear with me and i’ll Try to fish out which marks are the right ones to use

???
There's a timing tool in the locking kit for that very purpose

I'm talking about the marks on the cam wheels, as there are two marks on each wheel and I suspect I used the wrong mark on the cam 4 wheel when I was putting it back in position after it went loose and turned anti-clockwise a bit.

If I compare how the marks are positioned on it before I took it apart I didn't position the 4th wheel in the same position as it was from the start.

And Yes of course I use the proper tools for aligning.

This image shows the marks at the red arrows as the correct ones. OK, it is not in proper position on this image, I hadn't started working on it yet.

When it went loose I aligned cam 4 to the green arrow in relation to cam 3, this must be the cause of my problem. Cam 4 is running a little ahead and will give the P0340 error.

On the left hand cam use marking 3 the red one you have marked. On right hand cam use mark 4 the red one not the green.  It would be good for someone else to confirm too as I am going from memory- last time I changed a belt was two years ago!!!
