General Car Chat / finally getting around to do an engine swap
« on: 26 October 2015, 13:33:04 »
At long last after buying a 2.5 tourer ( MFL?) with the intention of putting engine into my dead CDX, i have now retired the old bus.

silencers and cats off - (cats are better than the other pair)

then gearbox ( manual out)
then remove engine ( after removing aircon stuff etc. out of the way )
change oil cooler and anything else I feel like when have got easy access
then remove dead engine , fit 'new' engine
swap several bits from one to the other, sell off bits people might want , scrap old bus.

hopefully shouldn't take too long ( 4 years so  far , but it kept passing MOT, and its cold in the rain)

General Car Chat / MOT Passed ! surprisingly
« on: 03 July 2015, 21:52:47 »
Amazingly my S reg estate passed MOT on Thursday ( I didn't think it was due until September) , for a total cost of £275 including 2 partworn on front - which means have now got to get front suspension sorted then WIM, and new tyres all round. ( easier than transplanting engine into my dead omega - which is why I bought it in the first place as a donor 3-4 years ago- but keeps passing mot) :)

Omega General Help / Estate rear wiper
« on: 23 October 2014, 09:35:47 »
Where is the best place to get a rear wiper blade that actually bends to follow the curve of the glass?

Possibly VX dealer?

General Discussion Area / Fun and Games expected later today
« on: 17 October 2014, 11:22:52 »
Am expecting fun and games with my soon to be Ex-lodger.

gave him a time limit of 1500 Friday today to remove his stuff,  so far no change.

@ 1500 will start bagging and boxing stuff, then place in back garden under cover, change lock.

unless he removes before then- which I have the feeling is unlikely.

Background is he has paid fortnightly ( when reminded >25% of the time) with a weeks rolling deposit, which ran out last sunday.

So no doubt will have additional visitors in cars with blue lights!

General Car Chat / MOT Passed!
« on: 01 July 2014, 08:49:30 »
managed to get around to taking my S reg estate for mot -
1/ track rod end replaced - so a visit to WIM's in the near future
2/ plate welded in around drivers seatbelt - so must have a good look around it at other rusty bits
3/ usual headlamp alignment - how do they move over 4000 miles ?
so in all a good result :)

Omega General Help / possible 2.5 engine swap MFL manual to FL auto
« on: 06 September 2012, 19:14:58 »
essentially as title -
1/ had a FL CDX estate 2.5 petrol auto-- which I have managed to 'lose'  a head gasket.
2/ bought a MFL - tourer 2.5 petrol manual - tatty, scratched etc., 105k miles on clock, engine 67k only ( must have been one of the 80K! cambelt failures - as on the receipt Vauxhall paid 20% towards replacement engine!)- bought it mainly as immediate run-around - with possibility of putting engine in the FL - when the tourer fails mot miserably in oct.( or if not will continue running around in it).

Question -- Is it as simple as :-
a) remove engine /gearbox from each car
b) swap gearboxes ( as would prefer to have the auto in the FL)
apart from silencers etc. ( cats on mfl are better than the FL - so will swap best of most bits to the FL)-
I assume the engine management magic boxes are the same- so it maybe as simple as a bit of spanner work?

Omega General Help / Camshaft sensor?
« on: 28 May 2012, 07:55:21 »
Car is 2.5 petrol
A couple of months ago had code 19 ( engine running) ,
1/ changed sensor
no change
2/ another sensor (both genuine VX)
no change - lack of power, would'nt rev above ~4k with no load
3/ took car out 30 mph, pushed gear selector to 3rd (no change obviously)
then 2 - revs increased
then 1 ( ~25-27 mph) revved to redline or therabouts , sounds like have blown an exhaust gasket drivers side
4/ obtained a MAF ( as I had acquired one anyway)
Fault codes  (engine running)
19 ( 3 times) Incorrect RPM Signal
73 (3 times) Mass Air Flow Sensor Voltage Low
59 ( 3 times) Intake Manifold Valve 1 Voltage Low
21 (3 times) Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Voltage High

would appear to have possibly an air leak on air inlet side , which might explain 73 ( no trace of leak with carb cleaner)
19,21 possibly same fault- but unlikely to be crank sensor - as two faulty new ones seems unlikely.

was wondering if have disturbed a multi pin connector somewhere feeding into the ecu, which is throwing up all these faults? previously car had run ok

Engine now ticks over slowly and roughly - so may have caused a camshaft to jump a tooth - haven't done a compression check yet- not until fri at the earliest( and away next weekend)

Exhaust gasket ( hopefully not manifold) - will be changed when I look under it and identify the offending item- but would not expect this to affect the faults - unless there is a multicore nearby which has been slightly cooked.

Omega General Help / Crank Sensor??
« on: 25 March 2012, 09:05:53 »
Have just put Omega back on road after 2 year rest. 2.5 auto petrol, X reg
Has run for ~800 miles without any problem - now loss of power , engine 'surges' at 2000 rpm causing the car to try and kangeroo
fault codes are:-
not running  135, 19
running 135, 19
19 is 'incorrect rpm signal'
135 telltale check voltage low

does the crank shaft sensor drive the rpm? if so this may be on the way out.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

haven't yet checked alternator output ( but car has started ok every time),
seems a bit thirstier than i used to get .

work done on car is:-
timing belt, water pump (many thanks to jamesv6)
battery, silencer, front wishbones, geometry check (WIM)

So i am thinking of changing crank sensor--(car has done 116000 so maybe due one soon anyway)

Omega General Help / HT Leads/poor performance
« on: 11 May 2009, 23:20:21 »
2.5 auto CDX - sluggish and thirsty- changed MAP sensor as wrecked old one, fuel up from 15 mpg to 25 mpg now, appears to run on 4 pots - but a few weeks ago checked spark on drivers side head with the 'flashing ht lights - all sparked- which presumably implies Dispack is working on all 3 coils - assume i have one or more ht leads down on passenger side head- anybody have any recommendations on best source for set of HT leads? ( have replaced cam cover gaskets with VX ones- and plug holes are now oil free - for last 1500 miles ) - used to get 35 mpg on a 200 mile M25 run - yesterday - 22 mpg and reduced power

Newbie Welcome Area / New to OOF
« on: 14 April 2009, 21:31:29 »
Hi, new to this group , but what I have seen looks good - have used several threads to play with engine  ( rather than a manual) - so hope it will keep my 2.5 CDX 'X' Reg estate on the road, got it for a very good price off the company ( gaskets for rocker cover  etc. cost more than the car!)

General Discussion Area / Snow driving
« on: 19 December 2009, 19:06:15 »
Can anybody under 30 yr old drive in the snow?
Got back to UK yesterday morning - no taxis- too much snow, then could not use company van (astra) as key in safe place , so forced to use Miggy -- pleasantly surprised how good it is in the snow -- who needs front wheel drive? - half predictable back end breaking traction to turn car into right direction then nudge it as appropriate - all good fun. - Kids these days don't seem to be able to drive in the white stuff -  why can't I go round corner at 40 mph like normal?)

General Discussion Area / not sure if I want to come back to uk
« on: 28 July 2010, 15:46:30 »
going by the various issues commented on by people in the last 6 weeks - I wonder what I will be coming back to for 6 months (continuous) #UK or EEC/EU or whatever name we have paid to have it rebranded as-
but on the positive side have escaped japanese food - I took them to a chinese restaurant- but what do I come back to - all laws from Brussels? -(now't changes) - more taxes ( better than the last exit fee I had to pay to get out of Yemen last week)- but inevitable as the bankers bonusus's have to be paid for -- (( I  feel a bit better now))
