General Discussion Area / Stemoshire.
« on: 22 October 2023, 10:30:35 »
Going there first thing Thursday morning.Step granddaughter has agreed to buy[subject to it being as described]a MkIV Golf 1.9d.Unfortunately we'll not have time to stay and sample the delights of Barnsley as she has to be back home in time for her second driving lesson, her boyfriend is slightly less than enthusiastic at the idea of her driving back here especially as it's him that's going to be riding shotgun while I lead the way home avoiding the motorways.Easy enough done Barnsley to Doncaster and pick up the A18 all the way home.Hopefully we'll be able to get in/out of Barnsley before Stemo sets the whippet on us :D

General Discussion Area / Great result
« on: 10 September 2023, 10:05:29 »
After going a man down in the first two minutes of the game[England v Argentina in the Rugby Union World Cup] I thought we would be dead in the water, but fair play to them England stuck to it and Ford did a load of damage so although Argentina didn't play anywhere near to their best England took a good win.hope they can keep it up.Congratulations also to Ireland on their success.Scotland and Wales begin their campaigns today so good luck to them too.

General Car Chat / Records
« on: 05 August 2023, 08:54:13 »
Alan Millyard and Henry Cole have recently set not on but two world records on Millyards Viper V10 engined bike. The bike weighs 1200lbs or 1322lbs[depending on source you're looking at] of which 700lbs is the engine.First record is for fastest bike two up which they set at 183.5mph after a run of 1.25 miles the second record which they set along the way to the first one was for fastest standing mile which they set at 178.6mph.The bike apparently does 0-62 in 2.7secs and the standing mile in 9.5secs[presumably solo]and riding solo Millyard has had it up to 207mph.

General Discussion Area / TT

Anyone else been watching this? I only get to see the highlight programmes 3 wins so far for Michael Dunlop taking his total to 24 wins[2 short of his uncle Joey]with 4 races left that he's competing in also set lap record at 134.5 in the Superbike TT[I think it's just over 135 for the Senior TT] the Birchall boys also posted the first 120 mph lap for the sidecars.makes you wonder how much faster if at all everyone can pedal the bikes round the course.

General Car Chat / Bravery or madness?
« on: 29 March 2023, 20:28:17 »
Saw a car tootling along the main road near me today[I really hope someone can find a picture of one and post it on here-I'm not clever enough to do so]and thought WTF???!!! Turns out it was a Toyota Will IV and apparently there are 21 of them registered in the UK.Toyota designers must have been on strike the day that one was dreamed up.

General Car Chat / Changing times
« on: 10 January 2023, 08:54:24 »
In 1968 a motoring correspondent wrote "the simplest of all cars to drive,so I let my wife take the wheel of the DAF 55 and she coped with it easily". For the Motor show review of 1970 said the DAF 33 was "an ideal second car, easy for wives to drive"
Can you imagine the outrage if similar things were said these days :D :D

General Discussion Area / Treason
« on: 03 August 2022, 08:41:28 »
A 20yr old is being charged with treason, making threats to kill and carrying an offensive weapon after allegedly being found in the grounds of Windsor Castle on Xmas day carrying[in their words]"What is believed to be a crossbow". Although if found guilty he'd not get it does treason still carry the death penalty? I know it remained a hanging offence even after the death penalty had been generally abolished.

General Discussion Area / Mobile phone
« on: 04 July 2022, 19:10:45 »
When I joined the forum I did so on the computer at home and while I had a mobile phone it was a basic thing that couldn't access the internet. Now that I have such a phone[Galaxy S9] is there any way I can pair it to the forum or would I have to start out as a newbie as far as the phone is concerned?

General Car Chat / Turbo
« on: 14 June 2022, 09:15:10 »
This is on a Volvo 2.4 petrol engine with a low pressure turbo fitted [not my car] there is oil on the walls of at least some of the pipework to/from the turbo, this I'm told is the turbo seals having gone/on their way out.Looking on-line it seems there are no seals as such but some kind of "thrower" rings to stop the oil getting out until it can drain back to the engine? and that excess pressure from a blocked breather system or a blocked air filter or a kink/blockage in the oil drain pipe would be the likely cause? If the turbo needs repair/replacement is a second hand turbo worth the risk? Do you just replace the turbo core[and if you do what do the different T numbers-as in 16T etc-mean?] or replace the entire turbo with a brand new one?

General Car Chat / Mercedes recall
« on: 05 June 2022, 19:12:51 »
Only caught a fraction of this item on the news this morning but apparently Mercedes are recalling cars worldwide that were built 2004 to 2015-they did mention 3 types which they said were SUV type vehicles one of which was the ML. This is for rust "between the brake pedal and the braking system" and Mercedes are advising owners not to drive them until the recall has been carried out :o

General Car Chat / CV joint
« on: 31 March 2022, 09:55:39 »
Any way of telling without dismantling if the inner CV joint on a fwd car is shot? There is rotational noise and a vibration through the car noticeable at speeds above about 15 mph[could still be present at slower speed but not as noticeable]and seems to get slightly less on left hand bends.Could also I suppose be the support bearing on the offside drive shaft? Have tried driving in circles at low speeds listening for clicking and none present so don't think it's an outer CV joint.Car is a Volvo C70 petrol with a manual 'box.
