General Car Chat / Jensen Viperceptor
« on: 12 March 2013, 21:48:26 »
Saw this car at the Classic Car Show at the NEC recently, my brother and I just looked at each other open-mouthed when we saw it, it is absolutely phenomenal, classic shape yet up-to-the-minute touches and technology. And it's now for sale! Really need to get in the habit of doing the lottery  :)

I heard this on the radio this afternoon - now, some might say that Piers, being British and a bit of a smug git, isn't really the ideal person to be heading a campaign against the gun laws in America, but he invited Alex Jones, who started a petition to get Piers deported for his views, to debate the issue on his show. Alex, a radio host and owner of fifty guns, went on a complete and utter lunatic rant against him on his show. Have a look at the video, to see why America will never change....

General Discussion Area / Write-off insurance advice needed
« on: 04 July 2012, 20:46:02 »
My wife has just received an email from Axa Insurance,

A routine audit check on your policy has highlighted that the vehicle you currently have insured with us, <describes car> was previously declared an insurance Category D write off on 20/09/2008. This information is recorded on the HPI website.

A vehicle is often declared a write off when an Insurance Company decides the vehicle is damaged beyond economical repair. There are 4 write off categories, Category A and B vehicles should be scrapped as they are no longer roadworthy and Category C and D vehicles can be repaired and placed back on the road.

As detailed in the Terms and Conditions, your vehicle is unacceptable for cover and we will be unable to continue to insure this vehicle due to it’s history. Your policy will be cancelled in 7 days with effect from 23:59 on 11/07/2012 unless a change of vehicle is made on your policy.

What do we do now?  :-\ :-\  Do I just re-insure it, declaring that it has previously been written off??

General Discussion Area / Can I get my photos back?
« on: 31 May 2012, 19:04:29 »
My desktop computer did something strange the other day, and after this happened, it was as if it had reverted back to how it was straight out of the box - as a result, all the photos I had stored in 'My Pictures' have now disappeared - there were thousands from the past 6 or 7 years of holidays, the kids, events, etc etc. I'm just in a daze at the moment, I just can't believe I've lost them all. I know I should have backed them up, and I did this with a lot of the early ones of the kids but not with the rest.

Does anyone know if there's anything I can do, or have I lost them forever?  :'( :'(

Cars for Sale & wanted / F/S 2001 Elite Estate 2.6
« on: 29 May 2012, 21:05:41 »

Hi everyone, I'm having to sell my Persian Red, 2001 Elite Estate, it is the 2.6 V6 and I have owned it for about 3 years. It has been a fantastic car for my family but I now need something more economical as I have a new job which is quite a few miles away. For the benefit of guests of the forum who may not know the spec of these cars, it has quite a few features, including:-

- Self-levelling suspension, with towbar - ideal for towing a caravan

- Cruise control

- 4 heated seats

- Bose sound system with 4-CD multichanger

- Trip computer (MID)

- 17-inch alloy wheels

- 4 one-touch electric windows

- Electric sunroof

- Dual climate control with air conditioning, regassed last August

- Massive boot with load cover and dog/luggage net

- HID self-levelling headlights

- Electric memory seats

- Self-dimming interior mirror

- 4-speed auto box with sport button

- Traction control

Good Points

- All of the gadgets work! There is also a spare genuine, known working, crank sensor included with the car

- Cambelt was done at 115,000 miles in March last year by JamesMV6. At about the same time I changed the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, pollen filter, fuel filter, front brake pads and air filter

- Bodywork, although 11 years old now, has only 3 tiny spots of rust - on each wheelarch and on the tip of the rear bumper where it meets the rear wing. Each spot is about the size of a 5p piece. There are a few minor scratches here and there but nothing serious

- Engine is good and smooth, the auto box works properly and smoothly. I have changed the engine oil and filter every 3000 miles or so with the proper Vauxhall semi-synth oil and genuine filter. I changed it last less than 500 miles ago.

Bad Points

- I suspect that one of the front wheel bearings is starting to go, as there is a slight rumble when turning right

- The emissions light is on, and has been, ever since I've owned the car. It has made no difference to the running, economy or actual emissions from the car. It passes the MOT with flying colours on emissions every year. I have tried cheap Mass Air Flow sensors, which put the light out, but only for a couple of weeks at a time.

- I think one of the coilpacks may need replacing soon, as there is a slight hint of a misfire at idle - drives perfectly though

- There is minor damage to one corner of the rear bumper where a car glanced it going down my street - you can see this in my pictures. Also a corner of the front bumper has been scraped and touched up at some time before I had the car

- The rear seat piping has come through in a couple of small areas, this has never bothered me

- A ticking from the engine when cold, this completely disappears when up to temperature. Could be exhaust manifold?

I have tried to describe this car as honestly as possible, and will be very sad to see it go. It's only now that I've bought a Mondeo that I really appreciate how good this car is  :(   Any trial is welcomed, but it's not insured at the moment

Omega General Help / Ticking then misfire
« on: 19 April 2012, 18:25:39 »
Recently my car started to misfire - I assumed this was due to water dripping on my n/s coil pack, as it has done before, but all the spark plug wells are bone dry on both sides.

This has developed into a puzzling problem - when the engine is cold, it starts and idles normally on all cylinders, but when driving, there is a loud-ish ticking in time with engine speed which wasn't there before, which gets louder with increased acceleration. As soon as the engine is warm, it starts to misfire again.

Codes I'm getting are:
0100 MAF
0161 O2 sensor (an old code I think)
0300 Random/multiple misfire detected
0306 misfire cylinder 6
0305 misfire cylinder 5
0304 misfire cylinder 4
0305 misfire cylinder 5 (again)

As I said, there are old codes on there which I haven't cleared since the problem with water on the 1-3-6 coil pack, I've got a feeling the new misfire must be on cylinder 5.

An ideas on what could be happening?  :-\

« on: 14 March 2012, 18:58:25 »
I seem to have broken one of the plastic brackets on the removable load cover of my estate which clips into each side. Has anyone got one I can buy, or do I need the complete cover?

Just had a good week in work, won myself the use of a brand-new Range Rover Vogue TDV8 for a few days over Christmas, with free diesel  :y

It just so happens to be one of my dream cars, and it's got satellite TV for the kids!!

Just drove it home, it's a monster - I'm very happy at the moment  :)

General Discussion Area / The calibre of people
« on: 15 October 2011, 12:47:02 »
Yesterday, in work, a first aider got called to one of our warehouse workers. It turns out that he had cut the tip of his little finger. Nothing serious, in fact nothing more than a paper cut which was bleeding a little bit. He insisted on an accident form being filled in.
Next thing, his wife was on the phone asking to speak to her husband because if he had to go to the hospital, she wanted to go with him to make sure he was OK. He had obviously phoned her to tell her the devastating news.

I was just speechless - at times like these, I wonder:-

a) how we ever won a world war when our grandmothers and grandfathers produced showers of s**t like this
b) how we would ever win a world war again, when this is the calibre of soldier we are able to produce

Now I know that this isn't representative of most people out there, and we can still produce soldiers that are the envy of the world, and I have the utmost respect for them and their families, but as the compensation culture becomes the norm, I really fear for what we're heading for and how we'll cope if it ever happens  :(
