On my way to/from work I pass what was until recently a bus garage,this has now been split down into different units.One chap has taken two of these and started doing business as a garage,fair play to him whenever I pass he always seems to be busy.Anyway some of the time he drives about in a Hillman Avenger-don't know what engine he's got in it[certainly not standard Rootes mechanicals judging by the sound ]and it's got a large bonnet bulge fitted,it does look at bit tatty it must be said.However his other car which appears to be an absolute minter is the Avengers slightly larger relative a Chrysler 2L resplendent in Gold with a Beige/Cream vynil roof.

Avengers were street furniture - my mother had three, and I've had one since. They have a massive engine bay, so bigger engines are easy to fit: if you start with an automatic car then a Rover V8 and BW35(which is what the Avenger used) is a simple fit. And if there's room for a Rover then there's room for a small-block Mopar. Although the back axle isn't really up to that level of torque...


Chrysler 180s though were always rare, even in France. Although its replacement, the Tagora, was an even worse seller.

There's a body shop next door to the garage where I get my MOT's done and they occasionally have some interesting stuff in there for restoration.

I've still got my 71 and 76 avenger saloons. but they haven't been on the road since 95 and 99 respectively.

Lucky man. I would love another Avenger to fettle and tune. They were a surprisingly capable car with the right bits put on.

Back in the early '80s I bought an Avenger estate for £15 it had snapped the timing chain put a new chain and tensioner on it and it was a handy little piece of kit from then on until the rust killed it.Further "classics" round here[these are on the road where my lock up is]are a Wolesley 1500,a '30s/'40s Wolesley[both at the same house] and a Triumph Herald coupe.
