Title: Openreach part 2
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 11 July 2019, 18:33:28
Symptoms.......the phone has so much 'crackle and interference' that I wouldn't know if I'm talking to Frank Bruno or Shirley Temple.

Internet is glacially slow...........0.7 down and 0.3 upload.

Anyway, the Openreach man calls today and tells me there is nothing wrong outside  so not their problem, and they will charge me £65. :-\

I asked if, for a favour, he would check inside the house. He checked router and it's connections, the phone itself, and everything else within the house. He found no faults.

So no problem in or outside the property. He left and said there was no more he could do. Not happy about this. :-\

Prior to this I spent more than an hour with Talk Talk going through  a telephone diagnostic check. They said everything was fine and dandy from the socket to the router which is why they made an appointment for Openreach to attend. :-\

My guess is the Openreach guy is the one who is wrong.

Three or four phones, Dave.

Pretty sure the problem is outside but Openreach don't want to deal with it.

Any bits of lorry still embedded in the cable?

Openreach replaced cable outside last year when the symptoms were exactly as they are now. They probably don't want to do it again. :)

Did he not listen to the line? Openreach tried this on with me a few years back....nothing wrong, that will be £70 please. I told them to eff off as I wasn't told there would be a charge beforehand. They agreed that I should have been.
The fault continued, so I phoned and said I wasn't happy with the service and wished to put in a complaint. Next day, the line was fine.
Flooded underground lines, I reckon mine was as it had been pissing it down for days.

Yes, from the description i'd say there's a UG cable / joint that's sitting in a flooded chamber or duct probably on the D side (ie. between the pole feeder and the street cab (PCP)).... Well that's my guess!

The first thing we used to do was climb the pole, put a handset on the relevant pair and ring the exchange. Soon know which side of the DP the fault was.

Most poles have a D on them now...  ;D

I think this engineer was long past climbing a pole. Too old ....too fat. My guess is that he just 'couldn't be arsed'

A crackle, but line testing OK, is normally a bad connection.  Sadly, this can be anywhere from the earpiece in your handset all the way to the line card in your local exchange, at which point it becomes digital.

You need to keep complaining to your phone provider (which may or may not be the same as your broadband provider).  Obviously do what you can to prove it not to be in your house - if you have an NTE5, ensure you are testing from the test socket behind the lower front plate and so on.

When you've a voice problem, its often best to keep broadband out of the discussion with BT, fix the voice and the broadband will usually follow.

&

I had this problem for some time. They eventually after a cloud burst thunderstorm, had to rewire the complete joint where every cable was cross taking to everyone else in a flooded manhole. This was okay for a bit until a sustained period of rain where there was lots of noise on the line again, so they renewed the manhole & presumably replaced the table from the telegraph pole 30m away from the manhole to the cabinet on the main road, about 10m & around the corner from the manhole.
