I have recently got myself an iPhone and even intend to try and work out how to use it.
Im now thinking about handsfree use in the car so have been looking at Parrot kits for sale on ebay. If I get one I presume I have to then get a dedicated lead to connect it to the car ?
If so, what lead, and where does it connect ?
Is it worth looking at other possibilities apart from Parrot. Apple carplay for example.

Errr...no. The only feed the parrot will need is birdseed. Sorry, 12V. ;D Usually from a cig lighter socket, via a usb attachment. The type you can buy in most garage shops, except you're a bit of a garage dodger.

Unless your car is modern enough to connect to your phone directly, it reall is a compromise, Albs. Some might say not worth the effort.

Got a Parrott CK3100 fitted in my Elite and has worked fine .Unsure how it was wired in but invoice shows a Autolead part number and remember the guy saying it had been picked up at the Nokia hardwired part of the cars own wiring under the glovebox.
Microphone fitted by interior mirror and little display just under main headlight switch.
When used it auto disconnects the audio part from the radio/cd player and sound comes through car speakers .
All worked fine...…...although have a slight issue with internal of NCDC since getting nav back working so need the skills of TB to sort it out

Albs...I rate it as it works fine and if you spend a lot of time behind the wheel driving and need to be incontact with work etc,I think its a good hands free system :y

I don't know a lot less, Albs, I just know that unless it is plumbed into the wiring, it's shite. You asked which lead you needed to connect it, not how it's wired in 'behind the glovebox' on ancient cars.
WTF is going to ring you anyway? ;D And, even if they do, you'll just get fed up and switch it off. ::)

The built in mic is too quiet really. Using a Nokia mic in the same sort of area is much much better.
The CK-7W is what I used in my Omegas without issue on iPhones (the CK-7W lacks echo cancellation, so useless on handsets that lack cancellation, which is less of an issue with current handsets).

There is already a mic from an old phone setup in the car, but I don't suppose that will be of any use to a modern setup.

Much easier to install bluetooth in that as it has a DAB radio which just needs a plug in adapter. :)

The parrot is the best option, with the autoleads fitting kit, plug n play,
I sold the one I had in my mv6, to a member, if he is still on the forum, he might be able to assist, it was plugged into the radio loom, and a connection to the phone plug under/behind the glove box.

Aye, Parrott wired into the prewiring is a decent option as well. Parrott wired in to the speaker wires is wank.

I have a Jabra Freeway, £65 at Halfords, which works very well.
No leads in the car required as you just take it indoors for a via USB charge that gives you talktime of 12 hours. It just clips onto the sun visor, and with simple set up instructions it is all go! :y

Too much fart-arsing around. I'd forget to take the thing in to charge.
Decent brands for that type from £20, unbranded Chinese from about £8. £65 is excessive for it.

I’ve got one which plugs into the cigar socket no wires, just tune it into an fm frequency on your radio and Bluetooth it to your iPhone and you’re up and running. Has two usb charging puts on it too. I got mine from Trago mills about £15

It's an fm transmitter that you tune your radio in to. Then you can, theoretically, play music from your phone through the speakers or use it for phone calls.

When you wire it in, try to use the wiring look that's taped behind glove box, as that's what gives you phone mute, used in conjunction with the phone wire on the head unit, also use the Nokia mic.

So, where is the best place to install the little box ? First thought is glovebox for convenience, but then theres the loss of storage space... :-\

Fitted my Blue Parrott box on the removable section of panelling under the glove box.Drilled 4 holes and secured it with long black cable ties so it can be accessed by just turning the 3 black fixing lugs and dropping down.Nice and tidy and you cant see the cable ties unless you lay upside down in the passenger footwell which I cant imaging many people will want to ;D

Nokia kit arrived this morning. The wiring doesnt have a plug on the end which is a surprise, but looking at the one in DG,s link it isn't supposed to. Just has some scotchlok type connectors with it, so hopefully just join them up to whatever wiring is taped up behind the glovebox ?
There are four wires.
Red (fused) - 12v
Blue (fused)- Ign.
Yellow - mute
Black - earth (0v)
Hopefully quite simple to install.
Also included are speaker,mic, remote control. Should also have ben a data lead, which hopefully isn't critical ?
Is it possible to feel for the wires I need to get to, or does the glovebox have to come out ?

I have one of ^^^ in my Smart courtesy of my Dad courtesy of Costco which I think is similar to Lizzie's. It works very well. It even tells you when the battery needs charging but lasts ages on a charge.

Yes, in terms of those specifications it is similar to the Jabra Freeway, and mine does just clip onto the sun visor but only has 12 hours talk time, which for me is a good two months of use. It is very reliable, clear, and does it's job well, but for some is classed as "expensive". For me though it is perfect and is far better than the previous Parratt I had that gave up after 1 year! Mine was just £65 compared to that example which is £86, but for quality you pay what suits you;)

The data lead was only used to connect the early Nokia phone cradle, so no, not needed for Bluetooth to work.

As others have said, the easiest fit is via an adapter which plugs into car loom (above glovebox) and the other end(s) into the various sockets on the CK-7W box.
You need to run the Remote Control to a convenient location - this is used to answer call (if you don't set phone to auto-answer), make a call (if phone supports voice dialling) and set the volume*. Mine is double sided taped to centre console just in front of gear lever.
*just use it to roughly set volume to right sort of level, then in use, just use normal stereo steering wheel volume controls to adjust volumes as required.
Personally, I would run in and fit the Nokia microphone rather than use the car's built in one, as it works better, and the other end can hear you more clearly. Mine is mounted up on headlining near the car's built in one.

If you CBA to get an adapter, you can splice the wires in to the car loom above the glovebox. You need to identify 12v, 0v, ign 12v, Audio +, Audio -, and mute (plus mic + and mic - if using inbuilt mic).
Easy to do, but being an idle bastard, I always try to use an adapter ;D

And no matter how you do it, do not fit the speaker they supplied. You want the audio to go through the stereo.

All installed now, just as TB instructed, and works perfectly. :) Ive now joined the 21st century. Better late than never. ;D
Took longer than expected as the wiring plug needed was being used for the front parking sensors I installed. Wasn't too happy with them from the start so uninstalled them. Then had an old analogue mic and ariel which were getting in the way, so had to rip them out too. All nice and straightforward after that.
Just got to refit the glovebox tomorrow.
