Killed it dead. It is the French one though, and we are out out at 11pm, so I think it has dropped its guts in protest.
Had to dump it at the roadside and get a taxi the last 3 miles to work this morning. 

Does it sound terminal?

Sounded like it could have been, but I think it will live. I got a lift back up to it and it just about started and I drove it gently to work.
It has had a leaky injector seal which I could hear chuffing a bit, so bought a new set to fit after Christmas.
A quick inspection shows that the seal isnt attempting to seal any more, so it should be just a matter of replacing that.
Its a 20 minute job, but dont have a Torx bit here at work to undo the clamp which holds the injector in place, otherwise it would probably be up and running again.

Try various screwdrivers/knives that are 'near enough' then, when you've rounded it off, hacksaw/chisel it out. Should keep you occupied for a while. 

The bloke who gave me a lift back to the car is a cleaner who is sprucing the place up during the holiday. When he heard that a I couldnt fix the car due to the lack of a torx bit he drove home (about 3 miles each way) and returned with his own tools to loan me.
Car is now up and running again, and I owe that man a case of his favourite beer.

Managed to change the front crank seal on my one today.

One iffy-feeling cambelt idler pulley later and new belt kit fitted as well. Has only done 25k since last belt change but not worth refitting old one with that risk.

Annoyingly, first seal went in wrong (think the spring on the seal slipped) and leaked whilst cranking the car over

Well, say I changed the seal but using the car this morning meant oil under the car when I parked up. Seal leaking again......

One of mine had a perpetual, but very minor, oil leak from somewhere in that region, that no amount of crank seals and pressure sensors could ever fix.

In the end I concluded it must be the oil pump, which looked a bit tricky, so I ignored it and eventually scrapped it.

Mine, the original deal had gone hard so was weeping. Changed it and it did not feel like it was going on right so cranked it without coil pack connected and, as expected, leaked straight away.

Got a new one (Elring) from local motorfactors (1st replacement was a Corteco one) and did the same test, no leak.  Built it back up and ran it home and then out today to find a pool of rainbows in front of the car on the floor. Taken back apart again and the seal looks like it has possibly flipped at one point (or the spring has pinched its locating point). Either way, knackered. Did see a small groove in the crankshaft where the spring would sit so am guessing that is original locating point? Seal was put home flush to the oil pump and smeared with rubber grease when putting in. Had made a drift to fit over the crank reasonably tight so as to centre the seal when installing as well.

Have ordered a Victor Reinz seal bowl and will also price up a VX one and will try again if anyone has any advice?

Discovered that, on a MY2017 car:

It has incandescent bulbs in the rear light clusters.
If one of the brake light bulbs fails, there's no bulb failure indication.
There are 2 brake light bulbs in each cluster, though, so no drama, surely?
.. Except that it disables the working one when it detects that the other one has failed.

Filed under "words fail me".
Mind you, they couldn't make the clock work properly either, or the sat nav.

The clock on my XFR is about as accurate as a sundial........and why, in 2020, won't it update automatically when the clocks change?

Sorry, mustn't laugh at Mr Woods misfortune....    ...but I have visions of the flaming he'll get on the Jag forums for not having it checked weekly by a dealer, and the only DIY work allowed to be undertaken is polishing.


FWIW, my satnag is fine.

However, the clock ain't.  Cant remember if I adjusted it after the clock change a few months back...

Got a bucket and sponge out and rubbed the moss and green off the battlebus ready for its MOT is 2 or 3 weeks....   ...although now hoping that it will et an MOT extension until the summer.
