Omega General Help / MOT extensions
« on: 30 June 2020, 14:13:59 »
The MOT extension scheme appears to be ending early. So in this unjust world my cars whoe MOTs expired in April and May will be OK until September and October, my car whose MOT expires on August 15th will need a new MOT on August 16th. Can't this gevernment get anything right?

I quote:
'The changes affect any vehicle with a MOT due to expire on or after August 1. Drivers with a vehicle due an MOT before August 1 will still be granted the six-month extension but are being reminded that they must still keep their car in a roadworthy condition or face a fine and possible prosecution. What happens if I already have an exemption?

2007 petrol Vectra manual 1.8 estate

I have fitted all my Vauxhalls with £10 reversing sensor kits, powering them from reversing light leads in RH wings. It works fine in my 2008 Vectra saloon, which has CANbuss wiring.
The Vectra estate reversing lights are in the tailgate, so I took the power from the rear fuse box, depicted above; they work well. However, when not in reverse gear they chirrup occasionally and the lights flash. The reversing lights do not flash. I have checked the earthing of the sensor controller, it is to the earth connector on the rear panel.
I blame the CANbuss system, yet all is well on the 2008 saloon. Please advise.

Omega General Help / Opening and closing the sun roof

2000 Omega 2.5 perol manual estate old shape
I had planned to scrap this car when the MOT expired in April, so I dumped all my manuals. Then the coronavirus changed all that. Trying to open my sunroof, all I achieve is its moving backwards. How do I close it again? Come to that, how does it work? Is there a guide?

General Car Chat / LOCTITE EA 9492
« on: 19 May 2020, 11:29:33 »

Just a word of warning about this epoxy adhesive. It  arrived without instructions, what you see in the pic above is all you get. It is left to your'good British common sense' to work out what to do with it. Oh dear.
I eventually concluded that the plug at the E end turns a quarter turn and can then be removed, and replaced by the tube dispenser. In the other end are two blue plugs, which I rumbled can be removed by screwing screws into them and pulling. Then I could screw 2 more screws into the pistons and push them in, thus expelling the adhesive. The dispenser tube then got blocked, so I threw it away and expelled the two components onto a piece of card, and mixed it with another screw. I then applied it to the item needing repair, and left it 24 hours to cure.
I replaced the plug on the end. I discarded the blue plugs. I put the container back for use later.
As described in my Vectra starter thread, on a test piece, after 24 hours the adhesive had cured well, and withstood 24 hours in boiling water without softening or weakening. I then used it to repair my Vectra plastic coolant pipe. If it fails I will tell you.

General Car Chat / Insurance mystery
« on: 13 May 2020, 09:50:42 »
I bought my first Astra in October 2018, transferring the insurance cover to it from an Omega. I renewed in March 2019, and again in March 2020. Yesterday Hastings Direct e-mailed me, saying as they had insured another car with the same registration number, they would have to cancel my policy by the end of the month, would that be all right?
They suggested I contact them by webchat. All busy. I tried phoning, nobody there, corovirus. I replied to the e-mail, demanding a reply. They replied, promising to answer my questions within three days.
What do you think is going on?

General Car Chat / Vectra 1.8 starter will not turn
« on: 09 May 2020, 15:19:21 »
2008 Vectra 1,8 petrol manual saloon
This car has been off the road for 2 months with a minor coolant leak. all is now reassembled, ready to test start, but the starter does not crank. It may well be a faulty starter or solenoid, but it was starting fine before the strip down.
Battery has been recharged, showing 12.55 volts across the terminals. Turning the ignition key to start position, nothing happens, and the voltage at battery remains at 12.55. Similarly, headlights on are not dimmed on turning the key, and I hear no click from the starter.
Might it be an immobiliser problem, or a fuse?

V828 CDX 2.5 petrol Omega manual estate
This is my last Omega. It has a Phillips CCRT 700 On Star radio cassette CD player sound system. Car is not often used, battery has gone flat, I disconnected it to recharge it. Now I find I have lost the handbook and Audio manual. I have the securiy codes, but not the procedure to reset them.
There are 4 buttons down the left of the fascia, labelled TUNER TAPE CD PHONE, and below them is a button labelled CODE in red. Down the right hand side is a numeric pad. I recall there is a code for the tuner and another for the CD.
Can someome please advise the procedure to reset the codes. Many thanks.

1.8  petrol manual Vectra estate
I am fitting reversing sensors to a 2007 1.8 Vectra estate. The reversing lights are in the tailgate. What is the best way to power the reversing sensors?

Vectra 1.8 Design CDC 40 OPERA
Page 50 of the manual  tells me to press button 14 - done that - then select an empty CD compartment (picture of a finger) suggesting either touch the screen (is it a touch screen?) or maybe push a button on the numeric keyboard. Then 'please insert CD now',finger again, 'insert rhe CD into the CD slot' found the slot. Then, tick, 'the CD is automatically drawn in'. I have found the CD is drawn in when I push the big volume knob.
I have managed to insert one CD in slot 1, and it plays, but I cannot insert any more. I suspect my trouble is I have failed to 'select an empty CD compartment'.
Please advise.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-owners-to-be-granted-mot-exemption-in-battle-against-coronavirus
Great news! MOTs expiring after March 31st are valid for a further 6 months, to relieve Coronavirus pressures. Two of my cars' MOTs expire in April, including my beloved Omega, which is still roadworthy but will fail MOT on emissions due to a cracked exhaust manifold.

General Car Chat / Vectra coolant leak from coolant pipe
« on: 15 March 2020, 12:26:56 »
2008 Vectra 1.8 petrol manual
I have just changed the thermostat and body. On refilling with coolant there is a leak from behind the exhaut manifold. There is a pipe from the water pump to the thermostat, presumably the source of the leak. How do I change that?
