I am currently making that mistake. Driven gently it gives 65mpg, so if it will get through an MOT and not break down too regularly I shall keep it for a while.

that's french effluent flowing into British waterways  :o

The Diesel engine in my astra is fiat. So it's Italian too.

and Omegas are mostly German with a sprinkle of British parts 
it's very hard to buy British things when we don't actually make anything anymore  :(

I hired one for a weekend, that was bad enough. :'( Broke down after 30 miles. >:(

Well you should probably build something then...  :P
it's hard enough building a wall these days with all the regulation , let alone a car
apparently people want things "safe" so they don't need to use common sense  :P
