Nearly did a big TB
« on: 14 August 2018, 12:56:58 »

Just back off hols in Lanzarote, all lovely. Arrived home very weary at 3 AM and as approaching the house thought " The wheely bin don't half pong a bit" as I opened the front door and instinctively went for the light switch the realisation hit me that the house was actually  completely rammed with gas, turns out Father in law ( stone deaf ) had kindly brought some milk etc that morning and had inadvertently knocked one of the gas rings on and this had been hissing away in the sealed up house for nigh on 15 hrs :o

Stupidly went in and opened every door and window,  Christ it was potent, BG emergency where round in half an hour or so and after a while the sniffer said it had dissipated enough to go in.

I'll remember to turn off the mains next time, something I've never considered doing before. Won't tell FIL as he'd be distraught  :'(

Free carbon monoxide detector was a bonus  :y

Fark, a house full of gas wouldn't have done a TB - it probably would have levelled half the street!

Make me seem like a mere amateur. I only took out my garage, the neighbours garage, and less than £5k damage to my house, and £20k damage to my neighbours. And of course wiped out the car of the nice couple who liked opposite.

And from a small camping gas bottle. Imagine a house full.  That would flatten half of Merseyside :D

Liverpool was voted 'City of culture' recently.......but then so was Hull, so clearly that argument doesn't stack up. :)

Changed my gas hob to one of those types with a thermocouple(?) in each burner which cuts off the gas when no flame present.

With a wood burner in the same room i thought it prudent with the dafties ive got in my house.

( Clueless bunch would have gone in with a fag)

Many years ago-when I was a daft teenager ::)-I went looking for a gas leak at a mates house with my fag lighter on the go :o Late[ish] one winters evening he thought he could smell gas so although I couldn't off we went to the kitchen-the only place there was gas-and I reminded him not to turn on the light in case of a spark and off I went across the unfamiliar kitchen.Of course as it was dark I couldn't see a thing so out came my fag lighter, lit that to see my way to the cooker and stood there with lighter still lit sniffing at the gas rings etc to see if I could detect any smell of gas escaping :D :D Surprisingly there was no gas leak ;D ;D

Mandatory now, I believe? If memory serves they are for rented properties, as you can't pass a gas safe check with an old-style gas hob that lacks one. [edit] Which is why my rental got a brand new cooker - a) because the old one was getting on a bit, though fully functional and b) because the new style ones stop you from accidentally blowing the house up.

The ancient hob we inherited here has no such protection, I think the previous owners have been recycling it between kitchens for 20 years! (in the process they rubbed all the markings off it, so it was a process of discovery to figure out how to use it ;D )
