Play in auto gearbox handle
« on: 19 January 2019, 14:53:08 »

My 2.6 2003 auto estate has undue play in the auto gearbox handle.
It works but I have not had this problem in the five or six auto Omegas that I have owned.
Is it likely to fail completely?
The car has done 150,000 miles but otherwise every thing works well.

Define play...

Is it within the release mechanism or the lever as a whole?
Is it side to side or fore/aft?

The play is fore and aft. Nice to see that naval terminology is still in use.
It feels as if a securing bolt or bolts are loose.
The gears still change. I am worried in case it worsens and the range of play prevents gear change in this auto gear box.
By release mechanism I presume you mean the release bar that is pulled upwards to permit movement of the lever. That works fine.
Thanks for your interest

You'll need to get under it to look for play in the linkages :y

Thanks Dr Gollum,
Are the linkages easily easily accessible from below?
I had hoped that there might be way way of removing the gaiter etc. In order to access the linkages from above.
Have you heard of this problem before?
I was hoping it might be just normal wear.

It's been a while since I last went under an auto...

Probably accessible enough using a lift, but can't recall if you need to drop the heat shield.

There's a couple of circlips and a threaded rod that hold the selector linkage ;)
