Reconditioning ignition locks - are we stuffed?
« on: 10 August 2020, 11:15:16 »

The recommended repair kit for our barrels as found here...

https://www.nwkeys.co.uk/Product/discontinued-keying-kit-to-suit-vauxhall-h-y-laser-series-locks

is discontinued, so, what's our options? Has anyone found any other places out there? Mine's getting a bit unhappy in this weather and want to get on it before we're left stranded.

Hope you're all still alive and well! Ta  :y

As Andy says, you have a spare and little used lock in your glove box, same key. They re quite fun to overhaul too, there is a guide on this forum. Don't get over confident and pull they key out with the lock cylinder out of the barrel, though, or all the springs and slides will ping out and vanish on the carpet.

I think Al was suggesting using old locks as a source for the brass tumblers  :y

I seem to remember though that a glove box lock barrel didn't have as many tumblers in them as a door or ignition barrel ...

Just, NO
Which leaves VX as the replacement source. With the added benefit that the keys will work ;)

Not specifically, they are but one source of lock barrels and their associated parts ;)

Whether using secondhand lock parts is a good idea however...

Thanks all. Yes, this has been my idea for a while, every time I encountered a scrap car I'd try and raid the barely used glovebox locks. Sadly Ive not not all the numbers I need, and dont get to the scrap yards as much as I used to. Am going to strip down the lock one day we dont need the car (done it before) and just check what numbered sliders I need, as I did make a 'map' the last time I had it apart but managed to loose it  ::)

This is a bit annoying as doing some digging the sliders are the same as used on (practically) every Vauxhall from the late 70s to late 90s and very early 2000s (Royale to early Vectra C!) so a big enough market surely to make them. Anyway, will have a looks and report back.

You do know that most people would buy a new lock for a tenner and put up with having to use two keys? or spend £40 and have an unworn lock that matches the car?

While I could strip and rebuild lock cylinders, there's no way I could justify the time and faffing about. Especially as I've experienced the very real problems that faulty ignition cylinders cause.

I wanted a new ignition barrell for one of my Omegas approx 4 years ago. I went to my VX dealer with my car pass and they supplied a replacement barrell matched to the original key, plus a key blade for it for less than £50. I recollect it actually was supplied direct to my dealer from another company rather than straight from VX themselves; I would have to dig out the receipt for the actual details....but it works a treat.
