Title: Garage recommendation
Post by: Dr_Syn on 06 March 2018, 07:53:42
Hi all, one of the things I want to do before I do anything else with my Omega now I have it is to get the cambelt and water-pump done.  Messing with the timing etc isn't really something I want to tackle myself.  Can anyone recommend a garage or a handy forum member (to be paid of course) who are local to Atherton or Leigh?

Before I take the car anywhere I'll have to strip the front down to replace the pipes for the power steering.  They were absolutely rotten and the car decided to deposit its PAS fluid on the pavement as we got home from picking it up!

TIA.

He is 170milews from you, but if you can't find anyone nearer, I would strongly recommend Serek, a Forum member and garage owner. He will do a perfect job at OOF rates and knows Omegas intimately.
Serek (sos-automotive.com)   12 Phoenix Court, Huntingdon, PE29 6EB  :y
JamesV6CDX is a bit nearer, at c135 miles, but you need to contact him direct.

It would be a big drive, but Serek would be worth it  :y

James did my water pump a couple of weeks ago, and since it had been 4 years ago that he last changed my cambelt, he did that too - all in under 2 hours, perfectly!

Not used these, but interested if others have as my baby is due Cam Belt change this year.

I will ask Matt (minifreek on here) if he still has the cam locking tool he lent me 18 months ago, he may have sold it as he doesn't have an Omega any longer. I can also ask a colleague of mine if he's interested in doing the work, but you'll have to source the parts and locking tool yourself and bring the car to Wigan. A bit nearer for you if he is available!
Regards, Dave.

Update: Keith, my colleague who did my 3.0 omega 18 months ago will take the job on with the proviso that you can beg, borrow or steal a cam locking tool. I havn't managed to get in touch with Matt yet regarding borrowing his. IIRC, I think the labour charge for mine was £100, and a bargain £80 for the belt & tensioner kit from Vauxhall (nos).

Thanks for all your replies.  Dave I'll most likely take up your colleagues offer but I'll need to fix the power steering before I can drive it to Wigan!

In the meantime, I found this on E-bay, will it do the job? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Saab-Vauxhall-Opel-Timing-Setting-Locking-Tool-Set-Kit-Petrol-V6-EcoTec/292239787538?epid=2197043414&hash=item440ad94612:g:1BUAAOSwng9ZrUIf

I cant really say whether that is the right tool or not, but I'm sure someone will be along soon to let you know.
In the meantime, I'll try Matt again tomorrow and I'll PM you my mobile as I dont always get on here everyday.

No sooner had I (very gladly) given my Sykes Pickavant set to James as a thank you for doing my cambelt etc. than I found I needed one again to change the crankshaft seal which has given up the ghost.
The one above is a Chinese copy but certainly looks as if it will do the job perfectly well, so I too have ordered one. If you don't hear from me again on the matter, and it's not made of chocolate, it will mean it's OK. (And I've now got two 30mm ring spanners).
The equivalent Sealy one is advertised at £107+.
