You think life is chucking enough car jobs at you, so after swapping a rear door from the donor 'peanut' we find the rear speaker doesn't work!

OOps, ''this loom is a duff'n'' so we think. Only to realise that the other rear door doesn't work either. This door hasn't been changed.

The little 'base' speakers in the parcel shelf do work, as do the fronts. It's ye old SC804 8-speaker setup with autochanger. Not sure if there's the separate amp in the boot, might be.

Presumably my first port of call will be checking there's no power going to the speaker wires, but after that not really sure.  Oh, and please speak slowly and in idiot-speak I have said before car electrics and specifically audio I have no clue about!  :D :y

Omega General Help / Leak - bulkhead into Heater Matrix

As above. Have a small coolant leak, which will start getting expensive in antifreeze if I don't sort it.

Eventually found a small drop coming from the bottom union that goes into the heater matrix on the bulkhead. Is this likely to be the actual pipe/union (presumably easy to replace) or the pipe 'attached to the car' if that makes sense.

Also, is this a known issue or am I just unlucky? Not found anyone else with this issue on the forum upon searching is all. Ta in advance chaps.  :)

Omega General Help / Rear Window Fun & Games

Replaced a rear door yesterday, only pain was once all connected up, the window didnt work. Swapped the regulator over, this didnt do anything ' ah, I thought to myself, I'll take out the motor from my original door, and swap them tomorrow. Easy'

So today I come to swap them over and it just doesn't want to go back in. Nor does the original motor, either.  :-[

I'm stumped! And all the available advice seems to be drill out the rivets and replace the whole assembly. Doesnt seem to make sense as you can unscrew the motor, presumably for replacement purposes.


Any clues?! Ta  :D

Omega General Help / Electric window motor lubrication

What's the best to use for lubricating the electric window sliders/cogs etc? Having replaced my FNS door, the new door is slower to go up than the driver's, which was always a tad slower than the others in the first place!

If lubrication doesn't help then replacing the motor seems the next step, but hoping that it's just meeting some resistance, not tired.

GM were aware that the breathers can/will become blocked, (in the instance above, through icing up in extreme cold climates) they had a cure. What appears to be a separate set of pvc pipe which presumably are a larger diameter than the 'hollows' in the standard breather bridge.

93156954 VOF 93 is now replaced with

95509857 which is termed a 'longlife' filter. Huh? Doesn anyone know what they mean by 'longlife', and what the recommended intervals for this is, then?

Though I can see the sense in such a device, given that I'm ideally changing my oil every 6 months anyway, I don't really need, or care about a 'longlife' filter for more money. Unless someone can safely say that I'm fine leaving this is once every other oil change, for instance?  :-\

is it basically impossible to remove the heated seats pads from a leather rear seat? I know they're meant to be glued on the leather fronts, just wondering if it's similarly impossibly on ther rears, has anyone tried it?

Basically this is on my spare Omega. We're at the stage once I've swapped the best bits of it over with the worst on my car, the plan was to whack it through an Mot, and re-flog. However, it's probably got as much chance of passing an MoT as...well, a 17 year old ex-taxi Omega full of fag ash, taped-on trim and weld patches!
So that being the case most likely strip for parts. 2.0 engine and autobox are decent, the factory fit phone-stereo, until it's a bare shell, then weigh it in for all of £15 a ton.  ::)

Fancy fitting heated rear seats to my CDX, and given a leather rear seat is worth about 12p, thought it might be a nice idea to use them for the heater elements.

After getting my Halfords Pro set a couple of Christmases ago I have been steadily building up a range of the best/best for price tools for Omega work I can find. All bought new, as I've not got any tools inherited, aside from an old battered toolbox and some incredibly useful Whitworth spanners.  8)

My experiences are as follows...
Sealey  3/8 Drive long pivot head ratchet - £20 and a shade cheaper than the Halfords one. Sorry to report, in spite of lots of positive reviews on here regarding sealey ratchet/other stuff, really unimpressed. Gave it away in the end to a mate after using it a couple of times. 5/10 Ok for the price, but vs...

Halfords 3/8 Drive long pivot head ratchet - gaining a pivoting head over the Sealey, it's the same drive as most of my sockets. Only a shade dearer than the Sealey, and double the quality. Has become my 'go to' ratchet. 10/10

Halfords 9 - 12mm flare spanner - basically the only thing to use on brake unions. The union may still round even if you use this, but at least when it does, you know you used the right tool and could do no more. Had one round on me, but maybe a dozen others haven't. Can't really mark it any less than 10/10, it does the job flawlessly, what else can I say?

Bahco adjustable spanner - excellent, Sadly no longer made in Sweden (this made in Spain) quality, when compared with my old man's donkeys-years-old Bahco the quality seems the same, sharp jaws, no play, beautiful finish and comfy to use. Only slight seed of doubt that they're not 'proper' Swedish Bahco means a 9/10

Irwin Vise grips - because Mole England don't exist any more, the Irwins seem to be the best you can get. Jaws are engineered like a swiss watch, and these are the super comfy rubber-grip handled ones where you simply push them apart with a finger to release. 10/10

Faithfull Mutimeter - one above the 'cheap n cheerful' B n Q ones, several steps below a Fluke, which made me cry when I saw the prices. Have tested the battery/alternator health so far, and very happy with. Would appreciate some crocodile clips, which I'll get off heebay at some point. 7/10 wish I had carrycase and croc clips

Ring RIL4000 - the best light for working on a car I have ever used. Top spotlight, that cuts through steel and a larger, wider-angle front light, which illuminates an entire concert hall with ease. Strong magnets and hooks. Rechargeable. I ordered a sexy black one, a baby blue one arrived instead. Seller hasn't even responded to my messages  >:(. Not Ring's fault. 10/10 for Ring 2/10 from ebay seller

Ring twin LED magnetic tool light - the stupidest thing in the world. But costs £2.99. And then you try and adjust the handbrake shoes on an Omega, and realise you have this stashed in your toolbox. And wonder how you ever did without it. On off activated by simply clicking it on your screwdriver/socket extension. Only drawback - keep in in a small plastic bag in your toolbox, otherwise something will magnetise to it and your batteries will go flat! A tiny on/off switch would solve this. 8.5/10

Irwin Folding Knife - used by my mate in the warehouse at work. In spite of repeated hints, he refused to give it me, claim it lost, and get another.  ;D In the end bought one myself. Stanley Fatmax are similar, but use plastic locking mechanisms for the blade. These eventually (and unsurprisingly) fail after a while. This Irwin model has so far lasted a year in the warehouse, being mistreated daily. Folding design means nowhere internally to keep blades, unlike classic Stanley design. Compact, all-metal. 9/10

Starwhille 3/8 drive 3/4 inch extension - Because no-one seems to do a super-short extension, and sometimes you do need one this short, found this in a trade catalogue. Satin chrome finish, excellent Made in Germany quality. Used it the other day on a mate's slam panel, no complaints. Feels like this will last forever. 10/10

Halfords 2.5 Ton trolley jack - this is a fat boy. Maybe if I were beefier I'd be able to pick it up easier. It's never intended as a 'keep in in your boot/casual maintenance' jack, but that's how I use it; so perhaps a little unfair to criticise its weight and lack of a carrycase of some sort, vs smaller trolleyjacks; though it would still be nice. I picked up a holdall from BnQ which fits nicely. The saddle is a little small for some bits, I'd like a second large one for crossmembers etc. Long handle and quicklift, which has come in a couple of times. Standard Vx wheelbrace fits perfectly as a shorter handle! 8/10

Minus the Sealey, all of the above I can confidently recommend that anyone should buy. As far as I'm aware, there's no better quality available for less £.  :y

basically offer more than the scrappy can offer, so offers under £100 would most likely be accepted. Yep. It's suggested about £80 could get the car.

He's offered it to me, I literally have nowhere to hide it. I've used my get out of jail free at my parents and missus' family re: car storage, otherwise I'd get it like a shot and make a few quick for no effort. It's going for scrap this weekend, ideally I've got to give the guy a nod if I want it today, or at least suggest another interested party, if it's not for me.

If anyone wants me to get some more info pop me a pm  :)

General Car Chat / 2.5 V6 Up for grabs soon...

Just to let you all know my mate who often gets cars in for stripping then scrapping has got a 2.5 V6 coming in soon. It's a PFL saloon, in a beige, apparently. I'll be viewing it over the weekend, and so will be able to give you a better description, including what might be useful/strippable.

Should anyone want a complete V6 lump, it'll be available. Again, no idea at this point if it's done 50k or 500k, but give us a post or a pm if there's any bits, big or little that I can keep an eye out for. Trim clips to body panels, just ask  :)

Omega General Help / SAI Removal - completely hmmm?

So the NS wing will be off very soon, and I wanted to check all that junk behind it is the Secondary Air Injection system - or am I being thick and it's something else? I know the general rule is kind of just pull the fuse and forget, but as the wing, door, bumper is all coming off next week, I thought it would be a good time to completely strip everything out that's unnecessary :)

Omega General Help / Idle - I gone done broked it, how?

Slightly shakey idle from time to time, generally diagnosed as a vac leak, of course. Couldnt find any leak anywhere, so thought let's try replacing the ICV. Got a spare, cleaned it up till you could probably confidently drink a fine wine from it. Swapped it over first thing this morning.

Before:
P and D 500rpm, slightly lumpy, and sometimes wavering to maybe 480/520rpm

After:
D 750rpm
P 1000rpm!!

Only thing I did is like a silly sod I forgot to plug it in before turning her over, so I quickly plugged it in whilst the engine was running, Have I 'reprogrammed' something here in doing this, or is it all down to what must be a bad ICV?

Oh, now at work and guess what I didn't bother to bring with me? That's right, the original ICV!
