General Car Chat / volvo v40 squeaking noises
« on: 17 October 2018, 21:19:14 »
Well here I am again after a while.
Posted questions on volvoforums but that forum is nowhere near as good as this one.
So here goes if anyone can help.
Have some squeaking noises coming from the front of the car.
Car was squeaking (it was happening at the begining when going in the straight line and was little louder when turning to the left).
Was checked by the mechanic first time but then there was no noise.
Now noise is almost constant  (humming noise heard at speed).
The mechanic rechecked it again and said it was probably the gearbox.
Said that to leave it alone and wait for it to breaks down   :( !!!
I jacked the car up today and tried to manually rotate the the front wheels.
Car was in neutral.
Right wheel rotated without a sound and the left one was making squealing metal on metal noises (not to loud but they are there)
Also both wheels took some force to rotate but not to much (I jacked them up one at a time)

Is this normal? Or should they rotate freely with little effort when in neutral?
Also is it possible that it is the gearbox since the noise is comming from one wheel only??
I would be guessing that this points out to it being the wheel bearing, please someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Can someone help since the mechanic is being a bit of an as... and said to wait since it breaks down that we will lookinto it then.
I'm pretty often on the road and don't want to have problems esspecially when I have a kid in the car.

General Car Chat / possible aircon problem volvo??
« on: 02 June 2018, 12:45:29 »
Got a new car recently (couldn't find a decent omega so bought a smaller volvo v40)
Car is in nice condition.
Engine is 1.9d 85kw.
But what bugs me is this.
Car has aircon and it cools fine but works strange (at least I think it works strange).
When you put the aircon on it doesn't drop the revs as every other car I've driven but it does so every 20 to 30 seconds
You can hear the revs drop as like the compressor engages and disengages every now and then.
Maybe it is designed to be like this I have no idea but if it is not what could be the problem here.
I haven't driven it to any garage.
My mechanic who serviced the last car says he won't work on volvo so have to find someone who knows what he is doing.
Anyone with any knowledge on this, advice would be appreciated.

Need some qucik advice.
Looking at two cars tomorrow.
Vectra c with 1.9jtd engine
Volvo first gen 2004 year with 1.9d

Vectra is more expensive/ and newer.

General Car Chat / Octavia mk1 question
« on: 16 May 2018, 18:52:54 »
Need some help with Octavia mk1 1.9tdi
Was selling it (it is my fathers car and the guy came to see it with a friend (supposedly a mechanic)
And his friend claims the clutch is the issue.
Car runs and accelerates fine, gears operate smothly without a problem.
Clutch (whole set with flywheel was changes some 37k miles ago, single flywheel complete set from valeo was installed
Original clutch lasted for 150 thousand miles
Clutch is low but as I remeber it was always low.
The only issue is that the car makes a small clunk noise when the clutch is pressed and put into reverse.
When you put into any gear and then select reverse afterwards there is no noise at all.
Is hy trying to pull my leg or is the clutch showing signs of wear.
I don't want to cheat anybody but don't want to get cheated also.
Thanks

Omega General Help / Some general help needed
« on: 28 April 2018, 11:59:04 »
Was looking at one omega yesterday but not sure what to think of it.
The car has some issues and not sure should I buy it or not.
Here are the issuses bellow.
Car has done 240k km.
Issue 1:
Seller claims it never had an accident, the car has some scuffs and dents but it seems strange.
There are two reasons I say this, first one the car has standard headlights but is NCDR2015 which seems strange to me,
and the seond one it has small rust marks on the trunk door and rear pillars on the same place on both sides (somewhere on the 2/3 from the bottom of the trunk lid, it is n estate.
Issue 2:
Engine light is on, owner says it is due to LPG and has been on for as long as he had it but I've had a mig with LPG and never had the engine light on.
Also car seems to be a bit slow by my opinion. It is 2.2 petrol. Engine runs very nice by the sound of it but it seems somehow it is down on power.
I had 2.2 before but this one seems slower regardless of the petrol or lpg beiing fed to it.
Don't have odb2 so cannot check it.
Issue 3:
Drivers seat is teared and inclined. The seating area has a tear in the left side, and the backrest is inclined to the right more and cannot be moved.
Like someone tried to move it and it inclined only to the right side.
Also the seat moves up and down electrically but the backrest moves manually (this seems strange to me but it could be that they did make seats like these??)
Issue 4:
Car has several leaks
Cam cover leak which is normal or usual cause here no mechanic knows how to sort it out.
Oil leak on oil pan gasket but it should not be a problem.
I've also found oil on several other places, connection of engine and gearbox,
some black thing which seats behind and close to abs unit have no idea what it is (it has several bolts on it) It had oil on top of it.
Also there was some oil or something underneath the one of the cam rollers (the one in the middle of the engine)
And some  liquid residue on the bottom plastic cover that extends from the fron bumper on the drivers side (UK passenger side)
This is under the aircon lines and the aircon doesn't work.

Can anyone shed some light on these leaks and possible solutions or should I simply walk away from this one.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / temp sensor and wiring on MFL
« on: 11 July 2012, 17:46:01 »
Can anyone post a pic of outside temp senor on the bumper (or email it to me).
Mine is missing when I bought the car it wasn't on and the bumper was damaged so cannot know where exactly it goes (never seen it)
Aslo if anyone knows where the wiring from the sensor goes it would be great cause according to mechanic there is no connector on drivers side bumper anywhere (car is Opel so it is drivers side here I guess)

Omega General Help / tricky question about aircon piping
« on: 11 July 2012, 12:49:39 »
Car came from mchanic today, no luck with aircon regassing.
He found the problem, one of the aluminium pipes is damaged and leaking.
I need the car today so he couldn't fix it
Also could not give me the estimate of time he needs to remove the pipe (plan is to weld the damage).

The pipe in question is the large one withblack valve on it that goes paralel with the engine and turns right after the engine (when it turns the damage is two inches after that).

Does anyone know what needs to be removed to release this pipe (does whole piping need to be removed or this pipe only)
I need some estimate in hours how much time it takes to remove this.
The mechanic is a friend and definitely not trying to trick me, but he really isn't sure cause never did this on a mig before

Omega General Help / urgent aircon question
« on: 10 July 2012, 13:07:15 »
Have scheduled an aircon gas refill tomorrow.
Aircon is not cooling the car at all so I suspect no gas.
Started the aircon today to check it and I noticed the fans in front of the radiator (between grille and rad) are not working when the aircon is on.
Fan behind the rad (between the rad and engine runs ok)
Not sure should they be working wihout aircon gas, and I don't want to pay for a gas refill if this it isn't the problem but the fans are.
Can anybody give me some advice
Also can this be a problem with car cooling (don't know if these fans are used for aircon or cooling the car)

Omega General Help / possible overheating problem
« on: 09 July 2012, 18:46:40 »
Seems the mig is loosing coolant slightly and it comes from coolant bottle tap.
It is possible but unlikely that I caused this (put some coolant mix, the heating was at max, car was around working temp but this I'm not 100% sure)
Was plannig to give the rad a flush but still didn't do it since the place to do it is the problem.
The story is like this.
After longer runs and especially after uphill driving it happened that coolant was driping frum underneath the coolant bottle tap (like it overboiled slightly.
The car once reached a temp on gauge of around 102 degrees, this was after uphill full throtle driving though.
The reason why I'm worried is after I bought the car last winter running temp was never over 93,94 degrees  and now it goes from 92 to 98 regularly and I do tend to drive carefully.
The temp when it reaches 97-98 and car is left idling does not rise
Previous owner said he replaced the waterpump and thermostat together with the belt (have no reason not to trust him since belt seems new and everything else he said turned out to be true).
One more reason why I'm little worried is that I'm taking the mig the day after tomorrow for an  oil change and aircon refill.
I'm not using aircon now since it is out of gas and I know that runig with aircon on will raise the temp even more
Worth mentioning that there is no oil in coolant and it is bloody hot here (38 degrees Celsius in the shade).

Do I have a possible problem?
Do I need to replace the coolant bottle tap (or the whole bottle  >:( )
Anything else that can be the problem?

Omega General Help / 2.5 td tractor cam cover gasket
« on: 02 July 2012, 16:55:20 »
Cam cover gasket on my diesel is slightly leaking.
Was thinking of changin it.This is BMW engine so I guess the guide doesn't apply.
Anyone knows what are the torque values for this gasket and an approximate price for the gasket itself.
Thanks
