air con stopped. urgent imput.
« on: 19 February 2011, 21:35:20 »

Was working ok. Not getting very cold, but it is still february. Suddenly yesterday, car misted up and temperature not controllable.  Think there may be 2 issues:

1. Aircon compressor not kicking in. Fuses all ok. Which relay is it so I can rule that out. might need a regas.

2. control display seems to be working as it should, and I have tried resetting it twice. air coming out is warm to hot, depending on temp setting. without air con though, it only clears bottom third of screen. need all four windows open to keep car clear, not ideal for carrying passengers.

Thanks in advance,

Al.

Check the compressor by shining a torch on it while someone switches it on and off .. as it engages you can see it start to spin.

If it is spinning then it has electrics and some pressure ..might be worth checking the rear exhaust vents ... in the boot, right hand side, bottom of the first aid cubbyhole, right down the bottom, ensure not blocked by rags/gloves etc.

If not spinning it gets more difficult as it won't engage if

OAT below 5°C
No gas pressure
No electrics

As another thought .. have you checked the scuttle/pollen filter area for water ??? A wet filter or water in the scuttle/controls could cause similar problems ??

Thanks E.

In no particular order.

1. pollen filter dry.

2. nothing in rear vent.

3. compressor clutch not engaging.

4. fuses intact.

looking like gas/relay/wiring. :-/

Given that you said it was "working but not getting very cold" I'd take it to an air con place and have it regassed .. about £40 round here.

By law they should do a pressure test before regassing, which will tell you if you have a leak.

Air Con looses about 10% - 20% by volume of the gas per year anyway, so if its not been regassed for 3/4 years it is probably due one anyway ..

Ime its rare for the omega to lose gas and not have a leak, usually in the back of the condensor(rad in front of the cooler rad) so only visible from undernieth looking up through the gap with uv glasses to confirm, once leak is proven of course. Although there are numerous causes.

If they just fire a load of gas in and declare ot fixed, then.... Call him some nasty names!

What they should do is half fill with gas to get the compressor running again (provided low pressure is the problem - which is the most likely) add flourescent dye to the system then get you to come back in a week or so to have a look with an ultra violet lamp for the leak source. Compressor seal and the fill valves seem to be favourite places for gas escaping.
