v6 water leak

So car went really well to Yorkshire and back after changing thermostat and cam covers gaskets. Yesterday had to go to London and almost home the aux belt starts screeching.

When looking in the dark at 2am front of engine, alternator, belt all wet with coolant and header bottle half empty.

Any normal causes in that area? Water pump?

Given the work you have had done, retrace your steps around the stat.

Aux belt very slack also and had almost worked its way off the centre pulley.....

I dont know why but shortly after a thermostat and water pump replacement my rad had a tiny leak,Extra pressure from pump?

Hard to tell if that is rad or condenser losing its bits. But have you defo identified the leak, and its not from the red tap seal?

No, not confident at all at this stage. There was no water around the stat area but then it could have dried out with engine heat I imagine.

I think I need to remove the rad, or at least strip enough away to get a really good look.

What I don't understand is why the belt is so slack and how that relates to the water leak.

Time was limited today, but should be able to get back to it tomorrow.

I clearly had to use that when I did the stat, so will double check.

One final thought it that the black plastic part in the photo was laying with the bits - I don't know what it is but wonder if it came away, got caught in the fan and damaged the rad that way.....

Yep , maybe wasn't connected and wire got caught in belt  :(

Was the belt routed correctly?  Should be tighter than a ducks plughole, relatively speaking... Unless the tensioner has failed :-\

So the tensioner is working but at the end of its travel. The large flat pulley centre of the engine is flapping around all over the place however. The bolts I can see holding the pulley on are tight but the whole assembly is easily moved around by hand.

What is this pulley?

So I think that must be the water pump...

If I take the bolts out then I am hoping it will become clearer....

That was your water pump...

Tensioner should be in the middle of its travel unless the belt is toast :-\

So am I now looking at Cam belt change and new water pump? Some posts on here seem to suggest once cam belt is contaminated with coolant it needs changing?

I can't get the pulley off currently as it just keeps turning rather than bolts coming out  >:( I can only assume the bearing has totally failed given the massive amount of movement.

Use the belt as a grip to stop the pulley from turning :y

Thank you - I will try again, but there is so much play in the pulley that it is deflected by the belt rather than the belt really holding it....

Lots of jamming and swearing and the pulley is off and bolts out of the water pump. The pump does not seem to wish to part company with the block though! I've been tapping it with a hammer, pulling pushing but no go. Are these normally like this? When I did the 2.2 cam belt the pump popped off with ease.....

There is a spectacular amount of play in the pump shaft, I am amazed I got away without a more spectacular failure!

Smack it with an 'ammer :y it will fall off...

Best use a rubber mallet :y don't want you to crack the block on my account ::)
