General Discussion Area / Re: Vettel’s successor?
« on: 01 August 2022, 12:48:14 »
There are quite a few up and coming "promising" youngsters in Formula 2. Last years winner Oscar Piastri is the one that is most talked about. Look at the previous winners -  Mick Schumacher, Nyck de Vries, George Russell and Charles Leclerc. There is also a lot of young talent in Formula E. Trouble is, none of these are very likely to be dropped straight into a competitive F1 car.

There is also a lot of politics in driver placement, with many of the drivers being tied to managers or manufacturers. Mercedes supply the engine for the Aston, so they have a lot of clout in who gets to drive for them.

Piastri is 'owned' by Alpine. With Alpine now running in 4th place on the grid, they may allow him to race for another team to gain experience. Can't see him dropping straight into the Alpine alongside Ocon at the expense of Alonso. And I don't see Alonso going to Aston either - why would he go from a team challenging the big 3 to a team that currently struggles to get out of Q1.

Aston have just signed Alonso so Merc haven't had much say in that one I wouldn't think ???

Drove down to Bognor Regis this aft (sat nav didn't like the look of the M25, so took us past some place called Brackley) in wifey's Astra. Mostly motorway but a few A and B roads. 65.3mpg over 250 miles.
Don't say you're not jealous, Opti.

Air con on?

I'm told it doesn't make a great deal of difference.

Used to be around 10% but probably less these days

Why,what's it done ?
The front wheels don't always point the right way...

Front subframe rotted out??,common fault and easy fix as it doesn't hold the motor up

All pulleys, idlers and other components were spun with the belt off, no noises or roughness at all.

When was T belt last changed?,more pulleys capable of noise in there too !
Another reason not to buy one...
Why? Because it might need a belt kit change?
In a word. Yes.

If it's six hours just to change the aux belt, then that doesn't bode well for the timing belt.

Once into the aux belt it's only a couple covers to get to the T belt
Was just looking at the instructions for cam belt, looks trivial once aux belt is off.

However, I might be looking to paying for that to be done ;D

If you got too and changed the serpentine belt the T belt is piss easy from there, fuel pump belt at the back is more tricky tbh

General Car Chat / Re: So what have you done to your car today?
« on: 25 June 2022, 19:50:44 »
Well, I,ve just had it running. Was charging the battery today. Just put it back on , turned the key and off it went.
Engine fault light was on, read the codes and got one for cam sensor. Then realised the cam sensor was sat on the seat beside me.  :D
Put it back on and plugged it in, turned the key and it would start. Took the cam sensor off again and tried again but it still didnt start.
So Im now as confused as ever.  ??? :-\ ::)
It did sound ok though when it was running.

It ran before the belt jumped teeth so has to be connected, have you checked the woodruff keys on cam and crank to make sure one hasn't moved enough to cock the timing up ,may not be enough to bend anything but could make it bitch to start

Tensioner pulley :-\
No idea until I get the belt off.

Obviously my plan is to remove the belt and go round all the accessories checking.

But it could be just the belt, as I've never changed it (obviously), and can't see any recent history of it being changed.  Its routed in such a way that it wraps around all pulley quite a way, so it could be its worn out the V's on the belt.  The plan is to just slap the new one on if I cant find any obvious issues with the driven components, and see if that cures it.

Quite a lot to remove to even see the bloody thing on one of those :-X

Landy rover's with that donkey suffer with lower spring tensioner failing
Is that the main tensioner on the arm?  Is it obvious when the spring has failed, or is it guesswork about how much pressure its applying?

My gut feeling is it sounds like the belt is a bit loose, but no slipping type noises.

Yes the main tensioner, the arm wears and puts the pulley at an angle which will throw the belt if excessive
