Title: slow start
Post by: robson on 26 July 2019, 17:15:57
After sitting in this hot weather for a few days the car turned over very slowly and then built up to normal could this be vapourisation in the pipe work. Once started it has been ok.

New battery fitted 6 months ago.It didn't feel like a low battery  problem .It was turning over very slowly even when the starter was disengaged and built up speed till normal.

Check battery with a multimeter before you try it next time and see what you’ve got. Could be parasitic draw pulling your battery down overnight.

Assuming battery tests ok and no bad connections / hot joints between battery and starter / earth cables then it would sound like a possible starter motor issue. They eventually will suffer from worn brushes and also a bad contact electrically inside the solenoid. Brushes are replaceable and if you are so inclined the solenoid can be opened up although it is designed to be non serviceable. Obviously easier to fit a replacement starter if it turns out to be this. But that's your personal choice . I would always overhaul an original rather than fit an unknown aftermarket unit.

The car started ok  but the engine was running very slowly it then gradually built up speed to normal. Something I have never had in all my years of motoring. Used the car since then with no problems.

I don't know the answer to his question, but I think there is some cross purpose talk going on.The replies seem to be based on the engine being slow to turn over and then getting quicker where theops last post in particular seems to indicate the car is starting fine but only gradually gathers revs to a more normal speed?

yeah a slow cranking issue or a slow idle once started ?
surely not both or we would be thinking stiff engine .
has it returned to normal now the weathers cooler again ?
